About the role
The Women’s is Australia’s leading independent specialist hospital for women dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of women of all ages and cultures, and newborn infants. The Women’s is a major teaching hospital with strong affiliations to the University of Melbourne, with research and education integral to its role. The Women’s serves an annual cohort of 80,000 patients, delivering more than 7,000 babies. The Women’s is the tertiary referral centre for high risk obstetric patients in Melbourne and further afield in the state of Victoria and Australia-wide.
The Fellow will provide care:
- in consultation with supervising consultants, as deemed appropriate.
- In accordance with the published Junior Medical Staff rosters, which may vary from time to time, unless directed otherwise.
- By incorporating the best available evidence regarding quality and safety, including RWH Clinical Practice Guidelines.
- Through effective communication with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- With accountability for care delivered by junior medical staff under supervision or delegation.
- Comprehensively, ensuring timely record-keeping, discharge preparation, and communication with referring practitioners and those providing ongoing care.
Training Program:
The Fellow will participate in a joint appointment between the Royal Women’s Hospital and The Australasian Centre for Endoscopic Surgery. They will join a busy specialist unit within the Department of Gynaecology, accredited by the Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopy Society (AGES) under a two-year AGES Accredited Training Program (AATP). The unit focuses on teaching, research, and delivering over 200 major hysterectomies and myomectomies annually among other surgeries, maintaining at least 8 operating lists per week.
The training encompasses complex gynaecological surgeries, both laparoscopic and open, including:
Complex hysterectomies and myomectomies.
Advanced benign pelvic surgery.
Advanced endometriosis surgery.
Endometrial ablations using first or second-generation treatment methods.
Advanced hysteroscopic techniques, including fibroid and polyp resection.
Additional exposure within the private sector includes:
Pelvic floor repair.
Gynae-oncology.
Fertility surgery and IVF.
Robotic surgery.
About you
Experience/Qualifications/Competencies
Fellows are expected to:
Attend teaching and training sessions as rostered, and as appropriate for their role.
Fulfill the training requirements of accredited training positions.
Actively engage in research projects during the two-year term of their contract.
Participate in and conduct teaching, audit sessions, and presentations suited to their level of training and experience.
Supervise and teach more junior registrars and HMOs.
Instruct medical students.
Engage in audit and practice improvement activities.
Attend multidisciplinary team meetings and activities.
Undertake duties consistent with their skills, experience, and credentials.
Serve on relevant committees and participate in management and service development activities, suitable to their skills and experience, in consultation with the JMS body.
Develop skills in collaboration, supervision, and leadership appropriate to their career path and training level.
Essential Criteria
- Primary medical degree MBBS or equivalent
- Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

The Classification and Salary scale will be dependent on experience and you will be appointed and in accordance to the Australian Medical Association (Victoria) Doctors in Training Agreement 2022-2026. Please note this position is not included in the PMCV Computer match.

This position will involve a substantial clinical and research workload. This position is funded for 0.25 EFT through The Royal Women's Hospital. The remainder of the remuneration is funded through private assisting, and private partnership sponsorship. It incorporates private assisting, teaching, and research. It is suitable for accreditation with RANZCOG as Elective Programme training.
This position is most suitable for trainees who are in the last year of their FRANZCOG training and have passed both the written and oral exams.
Fellows are expected to commit to a two-year training program and to participate fully in clinical service, research, and training in laparoscopic surgery.
