Role Overview
Work as a Seaman Purser onboard assigned vessels as well as providing Skipper relief of assigned vessels.
When conning the vessel has the responsibility and authority to take whatever actions are necessary for the safety of passengers, crew and the vessel, protection of the environment and proper conduct of the voyage, including:

  • Ensuring the proper operation of the vessel
  • The issuing of any orders, whether or not they are in accordance with the contents of the Company Management System, which he/she considers are necessary for the preservation of life or for the safety of the vessel.
  • Summoning outside assistance as required.

The Second Driver must not make decisions to the following effect, as this responsibility lies with the
Skipper:

  • Deviation/cancellation of service.
  • Declining to carry any person by reason of drunkenness or misconduct.
  • The authority to dismiss a seafarer from the vessel for gross misconduct.

Principal accountabilities
Second Driver:
Reporting to the Skipper:
  • The safety of the passengers.
  • The implementation of and compliance with the Company Management System on board.
  • Motivating the crew in the implementation of the Company Management System.
  • Ensuring that lifesaving apparatus (LSA) and fire fighting equipment (FFE) is maintained in good working order.
  • Familiarity with LSA and FFE and participation in emergency drills.
  • Ensuring that safety systems, e.g. fire detection, fire extinguishing, main and emergency fire
  • pumps, all function correctly.
  • Counting and recording Passenger numbers and ensuring compliance with the Passenger Certificate.
  • Routine Maintenance
  • General Maintenance and cleaning duties
  • Mooring operations.
  • Carry out daily start-up and shut-down checks on machinery if required.
  • Starting and stopping main engines, generators and all other auxiliary systems as required
  • Monitoring of main engines, generators and all other ships systems for correct operation, taking corrective action where necessary.
  • Assisting in the preparation of work list for the annual overhaul.
  • Ensuring that planned maintenance is up to date and recorded, including main and auxiliary machinery maintenance.
  • Bunkering operations.
  • Ensuring high standards of customer care.
  • Operating ticketing machine and issuing tickets to customers where required.
  • Cash handling.
  • Ensuring that all machinery and accommodation spaces are correctly lit.
  • Ensuring that all machinery and accommodation spaces are safe working areas.
  • Any other duties required by the Skipper or Marine Manager.

When conning the vessel:
  • The safety of the passengers.
  • Ensuring that the vessel is fully manned according to MCA requirements.
  • Ensuring that all stability criteria are met at all times.
  • Ensuring that official logbook, garbage record book and oil record book is up-to-date.
  • Ensuring that the vessel is navigated safely at all times.Carry out daily start-up and shut-down checks on machinery.
  • Starting and stopping main engines, generators and all other auxiliary systems as required
  • Monitoring of main engines, generators and all other ships systems for correct operation, taking corrective action where necessary.
  • Bunkering operations.
  • Co-ordinating all emergency procedures in the event of an emergency, unless the Skipper takes over.
  • Counting, recording and reporting of passengers boarding vessel and ensuring numbers apply with passenger certificates on each sailing.
  • Ensure that travel tickets are issued, fares collected, and takings deposited according to procedures.
  • Any other duties required by the Marine Manager.
  • Reporting of all technical problems or breakdowns affecting the operation of the vessel to the Skipper.
  • Familiarising himself/herself with the operation of the machinery and equipment on board and the emergency operating procedures of same.

Qualifications, skills and experience
Essential
  • Tier 1 Level 2 Boatmaster Licence with Passenger Vessel endorsement; or Tier 2 Level 2 endorsed for service vessels and area;
  • Pilot Exemption Certificate for relevant Clyde Routes.
  • An ability to establish a close working relationship with Skippers.

Desirable
  • Be safety focused and familiar with CoSWP, permit to work and risk assessment processes within the company.
  • Be able to demonstrate a strong awareness of the business environment, a robust customer interface and a proactive and positive approach to customer
