The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) is an international organization working to accelerate action on adapting to climate change. We support adaptation solutions at the international and the local levels, partnering with the public and the private sector.


Our focus is firmly on those who are most vulnerable to the effects of climate change; communities least prepared to withstand the health, social, and economic impacts of the climate emergency are our priority.


Founded in 2018, our organization is based in regional offices across key global locations. Our Europe office is located in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in the largest floating office in the world. We also have regional offices in Kenya, Ivory Coast, Bangladesh, and Beijing, as well as a dedicated knowledge and research hub in Groningen, the Netherlands.


Our work encompasses high-level policy development, research, agenda-setting and advocacy to drive faster and deeper climate adaptation. We collaborate closely with partners to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of results where they are most needed.


WHAT WILL YOU DO

The Director of Development is pivotal in ensuring GCA’s growth and financial sustainability by focusing on resource mobilization to support amongst others GCA’s flagship program, the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP) concluding in 2025, and it’s extension AAAP 2.0.


You establish and deepen relationships with amongst others bilateral agencies, foundations, the private sector, and HNWI’s to secure new funding opportunities whilst putting systems and processes in place that support our resource mobilization practices.


The Development team consists of a Director of Development; Grants and Contracts Manager; Development Officer; and two Junior Grant Management Officers. The Director of Development reports to the CEO.


You work closely with amongst others the Sr. Director – Programs and Finance Lead to disseminate the impact of programmatic activities into donor reporting; and the VP External Affairs to coordinate communication with partners.


Responsibilities


  • Lead the strategic planning, vision, and goal setting for GCA’s funding.
  • Build, shape and lead a portfolio of new funding partners.
  • Ensure rigorous prospect identification, research, and networking planning.
  • Lead the preparation of resource mobilization monitoring system and ensure the organization is fully aware of opportunities, gaps, and risks.
  • Maintain and deepen strong relationships at the operational working level with funding partners’ organization.
  • Develop clear stewardship and solicitation plans for identified key funding prospects.
  • Ensure impeccable reporting to funding partners.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES


  • Master’s degree in International Development, Business, or a related discipline
  • At least 12 years of relevant experience.
  • Significant experience working in a Multilateral Development Bank or international institutions/organization.
  • Strong understanding of the range of frameworks, contexts and motivators for donor funding and impact investing.
  • Exceptional networking skills.
  • The ability to speak persuasively and authentically towards external parties.
  • A strong entrepreneurial spirit.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Experience in the field of climate adaptation and/or sustainable finance.
  • Experience working with the private sector; foundations; and/or HNWI’s
