St Mary's Catholic College Gateshead is seeking a Temporary Part Time (8.25hrs per week) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Worker to join the team February 2026 - January 2027.

St Mary’s Catholic College, Gateshead, is a co-educational year 7 to 12 College founded in the finest tradition of the Josephite sisters. Description:
POSITION DESCRIPTION

The purpose of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Education Worker is to focus on supporting students, teachers and school communities in the areas of culture, spirituality and student wellbeing and engagement. Promoting the intent of the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle’s Reconciliation Action Plan – Reflect, liaising with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives within the school will be essential to the realisation of these objectives.

Skills and Experiences:
EXPERIENCE/CRITERIA

  • Demonstrated experience and expertise working in educational settings with a focus on supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities
  • Established and ongoing links with the local and/or wider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as an effective team member in an educational setting
  • Qualifications and/or experience (see below) relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education and/or cultural settings. This is inclusive of being able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and contemporary educational issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification for this position as described under section 14 (d) of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act 1977. In order to ensure this qualification is considered, submission of corroborated acknowledgment of Aboriginality is welcomed. (Desirable)
  • Current Senior First Aid Certificate (Desirable)
  • Current unrestricted Class C Driver’s Licence (Desirable)
  • Current paid Working with Children Check (WWCC) number
  • Willingness to Comply with the CSO Accreditation to Work, Teach and Lead Policy.
  • Category A – Accreditation to Work.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary is in accordance with New South Wales & Australian Capital Territory Catholic Systemic Schools Enterprise Agreement 2025.
