Life at Mission Australia

When you join the team at Mission Australia, you become part of a community who are determined to end homelessness and ensure people in need can thrive. United by our Christian purpose and values, we advocate for a fairer Australia, to meet the growing needs of people across the country. Together we’re building hope and possibility for all.

Your Opportunity

At Mission Australia, we are dedicated to partnering with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to build safe, resilient, and thriving communities. Our Intensive Family Support (IFS) program is designed to support families navigating complex challenges, with a focus on a strengths-based, culturally responsive approach that promotes safety, wellbeing, and belonging for children.

This role offers an exciting opportunity for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Practitioner to deliver culturally safe, impactful support to families. Your deep cultural knowledge, understanding of community, and connection to country will play a crucial role in empowering families, strengthening cultural identity, and fostering long-term, positive outcomes for children.

This is an identified position under section 14(D) of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 and all applicants must be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Australians. Being an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a genuine occupational qualification

Join our team and be part of a movement for change—your voice, expertise, and commitment can help create a lasting impact within the community.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Provide culturally safe and respectful support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, fostering strong connections with local community organisations, Elders, and Traditional Owners.
  • Promote and implement the Intensive Family Support Cultural Practice Framework, offering guidance on safe cultural practices to enhance service delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
  • Engage with families using a strengths-based, client-centred, and family-focused approach, co-creating case plans that support sustainable change.
  • Actively assess risk and safety within family environments, responding to concerns and providing therapeutic interventions in homes while referring to specialised services when needed.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations and comply with child and youth safety policies to ensure best practices.
  • Maintain comprehensive case files and undertake case management duties, including referrals, reports, and monitoring service outputs in line with program policies.

Requirements for Success

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, including the impact of intergenerational trauma and the challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
  • Experience working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, building partnerships between services, families, local communities, and other service providers.
  • Case management experience supporting families with complex challenges such as mental health, disability, and domestic and family violence, with the ability to apply evidence-based therapeutic frameworks.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage vulnerable families, maintain relationships, and collaborate with professionals to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Effective time management and computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and client case management systems, while maintaining confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • A degree or qualification in Human Services, Social Work, Social Sciences, Psychology, or another relevant field is desirable.

Please include a cover letter as part of your application outlining your motivation for joining our Intensive Family Support team.

Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.

Your benefits

  • Rewarding work – every day you know you’re making a real difference
  • Not-for-profit salary packaging, reducing your tax
  • Free external, confidential counselling
  • Volunteering opportunities
  • Opportunity to purchase additional annual leave
  • Extra leave including Mission Australia Thank You Day & Work Anniversary Day off
