Where you'll be working
Join the Blacktown Early Access Team (BEAT), a specialist youth mental health service supporting young people aged 12 to 25 across Western Sydney. BEAT delivers evidence based mental health, alcohol and other drug interventions within a collaborative, recovery focused and person centred environment. Working across Mount Druitt and Parramatta within PCYMHS, you will be part of a passionate multidisciplinary team committed to improving outcomes for Aboriginal children, adolescents and families.
- Work within a supportive multidisciplinary Child and Adolescent Mental Health team
- Deliver culturally responsive care to Aboriginal young people and families
- Collaborate with internal and external community partners across health and social services
- Contribute to early intervention, prevention and resilience building strategies
- Be part of a service focused on innovation, inclusion and continuous improvement
What you'll be doing
In this rewarding role, you will provide specialist clinical and cultural support to Aboriginal young people experiencing moderate to complex mental health and alcohol and other drug challenges. You will work collaboratively with consumers, carers and service providers to deliver holistic, recovery-oriented care that improves long term wellbeing and community connection.
- Provide culturally safe assessment, therapeutic intervention and care coordination
- Support young people with complex mental health, trauma and co existing alcohol and other drug needs
- Deliver family work, case reviews and multidisciplinary recovery planning
- Strengthen collaboration between mental health, drug and alcohol and community support services
- Contribute to service development, quality improvement and culturally inclusive models of care

- Qualification: Relevant tertiary qualifications in the fields of Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Nursing or Social Work and Counsellor. A Bachelor degree in Health Science (Mental Health) through the Charles Sturt Djirruwang program will be accepted.
- Registration: Professional Registration or eligibility of respective professional body such as AASW Australian Association of Social Workers, AHPRA.
- Evidence of Diversity claim if applicable (state which category): Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent authorized under section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act (NSW) 1977.
Selection Criteria
- A demonstrated knowledge of the Aboriginal concept of social and emotional wellbeing including an understanding of Aboriginal family structure and Aboriginal culture and wisdom. This will include an understanding regarding the practical and emotional issues that may arise when working with Aboriginal individuals with mental health concerns and their families.
- Recognised tertiary qualifications in a relevant health discipline (Social Work, Nursing, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Counselling or Djirruwang program graduates) together with current registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or relevant professional body & extensive clinical experience in mental health
- Demonstrated extensive experience working with young people, including adolescents, and their families who present with complex mental health issues, including psychotic disorders, bipolar affective disorder, complex trauma, depression, & anxiety
- Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of Early Intervention principles in the assessment & management of mental illness
- Extensive clinical proficiency in the assessment and treatment of mental illness including psychotic disorders, bipolar affective disorder, complex trauma, depression, and anxiety
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication with demonstrated ability to consult, influence and negotiate effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience in working with young people experiencing with Alcohol & Other drug difficulties
- Sound experience in providing culturally safe liaison and support for Aboriginal clients and families within acute care settings, to improve communication, reduce barriers to care and support informed decision-making.
