Academic Advisor I/II
Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Academic Advisor I/II at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):
Coordinates the planning, organizing, implementation and sustainability of the Chicano-Boricua Studies (CBS) Scholars Program, which resides in the Center for Latino/and Latin American Studies (CLLAS), one of the oldest Latino/a Studies academic centers in the United States.
The CBS Scholars Program is a comprehensive two-year student support services program primarily geared toward the recruitment and retention of students interested in Latino/a and Latin American Studies. It is designed to develop a robust intellectual and motivational foundation for academic and professional success based on a student-centered, community-grounded, self-empowerment model.
- Serve as an academic advisor to a population with a large percentage of first-generation and Latino/a students.
- Lead CLLAS efforts (in collaboration with the WSU offices of Admissions and Financial Aid) to recruit new students to attend WSU and participate in the CBS Scholars Program. Coordinate visits to feeder schools and other locations within and outside the Detroit metropolitan area to recruit students. Lead presentations and other activities to share information on CLLAS programs to prospective students, families and community partners.
- Lead and coordinate learning community activities for the CBS Scholars Program. Facilitate academic success seminars, such as FYS 1010/LAS 1410, for CBS Scholars participants. Coordinate with other campus units to create and track CBS Scholars class sections in Mathematics, English composition and other subjects.
- Organize and oversee orientation sessions and activities for newly admitted CBS Scholars, assisting with registration, financial aid and transition to the university.
- Plan, recruit for, and oversee the Summer Enrichment Program (SEP). Report on student progress and activities during and after the program.
- Assess the college-readiness of prospective and current CBS Scholars participants and recommend suitable tools and techniques to progressively support their academic success. Host academic, financial aid, career orientation and tutoring sessions, as needed. Advise, coach, motivate and track students in meeting the academic and professional requirements of the program. Collaborate with CLLAS faculty and staff on strategies to increase retention and graduation of participating students.
- Recruit, screen, train and supervise peer mentors for the CBS Scholars Program. Plan, coordinate and facilitate academic and professional development activities for peer mentors and interns that enhance the retention and graduation of CBS Scholars Program participants.
- Develop and/or maintain qualitative and quantitative records and reports of CBS Scholars to track their academic progress and to enable CLLAS to re-align recruitment, retention and graduation initiatives according to performance results and other factors.
- Assist CLLAS faculty and staff in developing internal and external funding proposals, such as grant and other fundraising efforts, to support the CBS Scholars Program.
- Develop and monitor the CBS Scholars Program budget and expenditures, ensuring compliance with WSU and CLLAS policies and procedures.
- Cultivate strong community relations with CLLAS community partners, particularly local and regional K-12 school districts. Act as a liaison and resource to schools and civic, cultural, business, non-profit and governmental organizations that partner with CLLAS.

Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's degree required for Academic Advisor I. Master's degree required for Academic Advisor II.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
Project Coordination: Ability to independently coordinate a variety of delegated projects while following up on multiple deadlines, keeping track of assigned tasks, and ensuring their completion on a timely basis. Strong time management and team-oriented skills.
Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally both orally and in writing.
Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office.
Planning and Organizational Skills: Demonstrated capacity for flexibility in the face of changing priorities and timelines, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Other Skills: Outstanding strategic thinking skills and problem-solving abilities. Mentoring and coaching skills. Proven ability to motivate people, foster collaborations and inspire confidence to meet common objectives.
Bilingual in English/Spanish (speaking, reading and writing).
Preferred qualifications:
Degree in Education, Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or related field. Experience in grant writing, fund development and budget oversight. Experience working with first generation students and/or diverse, urban communities.
