BASIC FUNCTION: The Accountant is responsible for processing the City payroll, including reviewing, approving and maintaining storage of payroll records and processing payroll checks. Accurately assist in the accounts payable process

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Prepare/Process biweekly payroll including understanding and verifying generated general ledger adjustments. Coordinate with HR to reconcile various deductions and additional pays.

2. Process period-end payroll functions, including end-of-year tax forms (W-2)

3. Process related payroll tax reports, including quarterly 941 and Texas Workforce Commission Reports.

4. Compile information and create documentation to support payroll payments to third parties

5. Work with employees to resolve payroll issues

6. Assist with and understand all phases of the processing of Accounts Payable including the reconciliation of vendor statements, entering of check requests and the processing of accounts payable checks.

7. Audit the daily cash receipts prepared by the cashiers. This includes verifying receipt numbers and proper coding of transactions. Perform daily cash postings.

8. Contribute to the development of Accounting policies and procedures

9. Partner with Accounting Personnel to ensure completion of activities in their absence

10. Develop a thorough understanding of the timekeeping software

11. Perform other duties as assigned

TYPICAL DECISIONS: The incumbent is responsible for accurately processing all aspects of the City payroll, working with supervisors and with the Personnel Department as needed to obtain accurate and timely payroll information as well as accurate documentation regarding accounts payable.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.

Experience: One year accounting experience.

NOTE: Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
