Through innovative food distribution programs and a strong network of community partners, we work every day to alleviate hunger by providing nutritious food to neighbors across Westmoreland County.

We are seeking a detail-driven Accounting Assistant/Accounting Coordinator to join our Finance team. This role works closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and plays a vital part in maintaining the financial integrity and transparency that support our operations. This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate who values accuracy, thrives in a collaborative nonprofit environment, and is passionate about making a meaningful impact.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage full-cycle Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable processes, including invoice review and coding, payment processing, check issuance, and timely follow-up on vendor and agency inquiries.
  • Process checks and bank deposits in coordination with the Development Department, ensuring accurate recording of donations, grants, and contributions.
  • Support month-end close activities, including preparation and posting of journal entries, account reconciliations, and maintenance of accurate financial records.
  • Assist the CFO with the annual audit process, including financial audits, Single Audit requirements, and preparation of IRS Form 990.
  • Contribute to the annual budgeting process and ongoing financial planning efforts.
  • Oversee inventory accounting, working closely with Warehouse and program teams to conduct cycle counts, reconcile inventory records, and resolve discrepancies.
  • Prepare and submit monthly financial reports to funding agencies and stakeholders.
  • Ensure all financial transactions and reporting comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal policies.
  • Provide additional finance and administrative support as needed to advance the Finance Department and organizational mission.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent experience (7+ years in accounting or finance with a strong, proven work history) may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Experience

  • 1–3 years of accounting, bookkeeping, or finance experience preferred.
  • Experience in a nonprofit, grant-funded environment is highly desirable; familiarity with fund accounting is a plus.

Knowledge, Technical, and Soft Skills

  • Strong understanding of GAAP; knowledge of fund accounting is preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to financial systems and technology platforms.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and discretion in handling confidential financial information.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external partners.
  • Proactive, solution-oriented mindset with strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission of the Westmoreland Food Bank.
