Anti-Racist Facilitator (Volunteer Role)

The Collective on Anti-Racism (COAR) was nurtured on the stolen lands of Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country. We seek to curate anti-racist spaces in Canberra. We run a monthly anti-racist BIPOC-centred discussion group and hold small monthly community events for the BIPOC community. We also use our platforms to strengthen and celebrate the BIPOC communities in Canberra.
We are seeking an Anti-Racist Facilitator (Volunteer Role) to join our Committee and lead our anti-racist discussion group.
Roar with COAR is our monthly anti-racist discussion group (total of 10 per year - Feb to Nov) where we discuss the issues/topics we believe are paramount to address in anti-racist spaces. Roar with COAR follows a book club style format where attendees can engage with resources we have curated in our Anti-Racist Syllabus or can simply join the conversation on the day.
This learning environment follows COAR’s principled space guidelines. This is a supportive space that holds people accountable as we learn and grow in our understanding of the monthly topics we discuss over the year.
Our space is BIPOC-centred and we raise BIPOC voices first and foremost. We do also, however, welcome white allies to engage in their anti-racist journeys through listening to our lived experiences and the facilitated discussion.
Key ethos of Roar with COAR: Sharing and centring the lived experiences of BIPOC people for the purposes of anti-racist learning
Tasks for the position of Facilitator:
Pre-Event:
- Writing the blurb (mini summary) on the discussion topic.
- Curating the resources for the Anti-Racist Syllabus.
- Creating discussion questions.
- Attending 1 online one hour COAR Committee Meeting a month to update on tasks/how Roar with COAR is going.
Event:
- 2 hours of facilitation on the day of the event.
Post-Event:
- Writing reflections on the discussion afterwards to be posted on COAR’s social media platforms.
Timeline of Tasks:
- Facilitator to write the blurb and curate resources for the month’s topic.
- Two weeks before the event, the Marketing Officer will create the event page and drop the blurb and promote the resources throughout those two weeks. As such, the blurb and resources need to be finished in the first two weeks of the month.
- Questions for the discussion are developed by the Facilitator.
- The discussion takes place on a weekend, once a month for 2 hours.
- 3 days after discussion is had, the reflections are drafted by the Facilitator and published on our social media by the Marketing Officer. The maximum deadline for the reflections to be dropped is one week after the discussion event has occurred.
You will not be creating graphics or doing social media work, you will liaise with COAR’s Marketing Officer by providing the content (i.e. blurb and reflections) and they will then promote Roar with COAR separately. You will be supported by the Collective Manager and COAR Committee, but will be expected to work independently and take initiative. This is a volunteer role, with the possibility of remuneration, dependent on grants.
