We’re seeking a highly skilled Principal Architect to join our Auckland based architecture practice who drive the ongoing scale and fit-for-purpose software architecture at IDEXX. You'll lead the adoption of effective architectural designs and engineering practices, influencing teams across the organization. Your expertise will be critical in designing architecture for both simple and complex projects, requiring a broad technical knowledge and a passion for innovation.
We work with modern web technologies, including TypeScript, Go, and cloud-native architectures, to develop robust and maintainable solutions. With a strong focus on DevOps and automation, you'll contribute to CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and system reliability. You’ll drive architectural strategy and thought leadership for a diverse portfolio of products, including Patient Management Systems, Workflow Tools, Client Communications, Wellness Plan Management, Business Intelligence, Referral Management, Payment Services, and Diagnostic Decision Support. These products span the entire lifecycle, from innovation to retirement, using a variety of technologies from cloud-native solutions to legacy client-server systems.
Some key responsibilities of your role:
Drive the ongoing scale and fit-for-purpose architecture at IDEXX by championing the adoption and evolution of architectural designs and engineering practices across all teams.
Create architecture for multiple projects, including those of higher complexity that span disciplines and systems.
Ensure current architectural designs remain effective and scalable for future needs.
Advocate for architectural and engineering excellence across teams.
Influence and guide high-level technical visions, aligning them with Engineering and Product goals.
Align the architecture roadmap with the product roadmap, ensuring mutual influence and synergy.
Champion organizational processes to enhance the ability of product engineering teams to deliver value.
Oversee the definition and evolution of IDEXX’s engineering values, principles, practices, standards, and behaviors across all teams.
Ensure product engineering teams deliver fit-for-purpose solutions in collaboration with Product and Engineering Management.
Prioritize pragmatic technical improvements, such as repair, debt recovery, and refactoring, while considering measurable business impact.
Take accountability for all architectural changes, including approval of:
External interfaces exposed via APIs, template variables, and database access.
Changes to overall architecture and macro technical structures.
What you need to succeed:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, Engineering or a related field
Minimum of 10 years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years as a senior technical subject matter expert
Proven technical people leader and influencer.
Experience with principles and practices related to cloud technologies.
Experience with modernising legacy code and decoupling monolithic solutions into modern architectural designs that meet business needs.
Experience working in a rapidly growing technology company.
