Assistant Grounds Person

Description


We are looking for an efficient and dedicated part time Assistant Groundsperson to assist our Groundsman with the maintenance of Brasenose College sports ground and other Brasenose College sites.

This role will also be required to cover maintenance of Queen's College sports ground.


Key Responsibilities


Sports Grounds – Brasenose College and Queens College
  • To support the upkeep and maintenance of the sports grounds, including the hard and grass tennis courts.
  • To prepare pitches and courts for matches, primarily in term time, and as and when required during vacations for students and external users.
Brasenose Pavilion and Changing Rooms
  • To ensure Brasenose pavilion including changing rooms are clean and hygienic outside of the Brasenose Housekeeping teams weekly clean.
  • To carry out minor repairs to Brasenose pavilion and changing room, keeping the Clerk of Works updated (including painting and decorating).
  • To monitor the use of the changing rooms to ensure they are being used correctly and safely.
Queens Pavilion and Changing Rooms
  • Queen’s College is responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of their Pavilion. The Groundsman or Assistant Grounds Person is to report any emergency damage/repairs directly to the designated person responsible at Queens.
Other Brasenose Colleges
  • Support with room setups and moving equipment on the main college site.
  • Sweeping up leaves around other sites when required.
  • Support with minor maintenance items across the Brasenose estate.
Bookings
  • To regularly check the booking system in place (currently MS Bookings) ensuring pitches booked are prepared and available for use.
Events and Catering
  • To ensure all food and alcohol provided in Brasenose Pavilion is authorised by the Domestic Bursar, Conference and Events team or Steward.
  • Events held on Queen’s College grounds/pavilion remain their responsibility to supply, set up, run and clear away.
  • To ensure bar opening times are to be for one hour after the finish of each match, if the bar is required. Otherwise, bar opening times will be specified by the Domestic Bursar when bookings for functions are approved.
Finance Bursary
  • To ensure all deliveries are checked and signed delivery notes are correct and passed to the Groundsman.
Major Repairs and upkeep
  • To maintain all grounds equipment in good working order and keep up-to date inventory of equipment for both colleges.
  • To ensure the Clerk of Works of the relevant college is notified of all damage and repairs required for all buildings at the sports ground.
Accidents, Incidents and Damage & Health and Safety
  • To ensure reporting of any accidents or incidents to the online reporting system when on shift, ensuring appropriate action is taken.
  • To hold an appropriate qualification in First Aid. College will provide necessary training at its own expense.
  • To ensure that they follow College Health and Safety processes, safe working practices and risk assessments at all times.

Person Specification and Criteria


Essential Criteria - measured through application form and/or interview
  • Full, valid UK driving license must be held to ensure use of ride on machinery
  • Experience of grass care, mowing and treating
  • Line marking experience, rugby, football and tennis
  • Experience of machine maintenance
  • Experience of basic building maintenance (painting, etc)
  • Flexible positive attitude
  • Physically fit to meet the demands and nature of manual work
  • Experience of gardening and hedge work
Desirable Criteria - measured through application form and/or interview
  • First Aid qualification
  • Experience of completing checklists
  • Key holder experience
  • Spraying licence PA1,2 and 6
  • Machine and equipment tickets
  • Pitch car qualifications

Summary of Terms and Conditions of Employment


Appointment
This is a permanent part-time post and there will be an initial probationary period of six months. The appointment will be conditional on verification of the successful candidate’s ‘Right to Work’ checks and subject to the receipt of satisfactory references and medical clearance.

Salary
Grade 3b of the Brasenose College Pay Scale, currently FTE £22,813 to £25,254 per annum (pro-rata £14,038.77 - £15,540.92 pa) depending on experience. Advancement up the scale is on merit.

Hours of Working
24 hours each week working a 3 out of 7 rota, including alternate weekends. Standard hours are from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm, with an unpaid hour taken for lunch. A willingness and ability to adopt a flexible approach to working hours and duties is necessary.

The post holder will be required to work the hours necessary to fulfill the job requirements and subject to operational needs. A willingness and ability to adopt a flexible approach to working hours and duties is essential according to the requirements of the College.

No smoking is allowed on any of the College sites.

  • Pension – Eligibility to the Oxford Staff Pension Scheme (OSPS). The successful candidate will be entered into this scheme automatically on joining, but on-going membership of the scheme is optional.
  • Salary Exchange Scheme – Staff who join OSPS will also be enrolled into the Salary Exchange Pension Contributions Scheme on or around three months after joining Brasenose staff
  • Annual leave – The paid holiday entitlement for a full-time contract is six working weeks (30 days) annual leave (5 days is to be taken over Christmas break when College is closed) plus 8 Statutory Bank Holidays. Annual Leave shall be taken at mutually convenient times agreed in advance with the Clerk of Works. Bank Holidays which fall within the full terms of the University of Oxford are normally worked, for which compensatory time-off in lieu will be given. The holiday year begins on 1 January and ends 31 December. For part years of service your entitlement will be calculated as 1/12th of the annual entitlement for each completed month.

  • Travel Pass Loan – a discounted travel scheme is available with monthly deductions from salary.
