Position Summary
Working closely with the Food Sovereignty Coordinator, the Assistant Grower (Temporary) supports the Nation’s food sovereignty and food security initiatives through hands-on agricultural work in the farm, greenhouse, and community garden spaces. The role focuses on harvesting, preparing, and distributing crops to community members and programs while assisting with crop care and maintenance activities. The Assistant Grower (Temporary) helps maintain productive growing environments and supports the success of community-based food programs. All duties and responsibilities are carried out in accordance with Ch’íyáqtel’ s policies, standards, and procedures, with strong cultural sensitivity and a deep respect for Ch’íyáqtel culture, traditions, language, and protocols
Key Responsibilities
- Harvest crops from the farm, greenhouse, and community garden at appropriate stages of maturity.
- Assist with washing, sorting, packaging, and preparing produce for community distribution.
- Maintain food safety standards during harvesting, handling, and storage of produce.
- Assist with pruning, staking, trellising, and maintaining crops within greenhouse and farm.
- Support planting, transplanting, and basic crop care activities as directed.
- Assist with maintaining soil beds and preparing planting areas when required.
- Support seasonal planting and crop rotation activities.
- Monitor soil health and growing conditions to support sustainable plant production.
- Assist with the distribution of harvested crops to community programs, events, or households.
- Help coordinate deliveries or transportation of produce when required.
- Support community events and food distribution initiatives.
- Maintain community garden beds and shared growing spaces.
- Assist with watering and basic monitoring of plants as directed.
- Support greenhouse operations including plant care and maintenance tasks
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in the greenhouse, farm areas, and tool storage spaces.
- Clean and maintain tools and equipment used for harvesting and gardening.
- Follow all workplace health and safety procedures when using tools and equipment.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Minimum 6 months of experience working in greenhouse environments, agriculture, gardening, landscaping, or outdoor labour.
- Experience with harvesting, plant care, or agricultural work is considered an asset.
- Basic knowledge of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and edible crops.
- Ability to follow instructions and perform hands-on agricultural tasks.
- Strong work ethic with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Good time management skills and reliability.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions including rain, heat, and wind.
- Ability to stand, crouch, bend, and climb for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift and carry harvesting containers, produce, and equipment when required.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities or organizations.
- Knowledge of traditional plants, medicines, and land-based practices.
- Food Safe certification an asset.
- Pesticide applicator certification an asset.
- Experience operating agricultural equipment or machinery such as tractors or mowers.
- Ability to provide a satisfactory criminal record check.
- A valid Class 5 Drivers license and abstract with no restrictions.

Working Conditions
This position involves primarily outdoor and greenhouse work, with time spent in the community greenhouse, gardens, and on farm-based activities. The role requires the ability to work in varied weather and greenhouse conditions and perform physical tasks such as standing, bending, lifting, and repetitive movements. Comfort working around insects and pollinators is required. Occasional evening and weekend work may be necessary to support community and seasonal activities.
