We are looking for an Assistant Professor / Associate Professor in Law, especially European Security (Tenure Track). The position is located at the Joensuu Campus and starts on 1 January 2027, or as agreed. The Tenure Track position is filled for a fixed term of four years. Read more below and apply by 22.6.2026.
About the position
The Tenure Track position of Assistant/Associate Professor in Law, especially European Security, is hosted by the Law School at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies on the Joensuu Campus. The Law School is a diverse educator of experts in law, and its teaching is grounded in nationally and internationally recognised research.
You will be responsible for conducting and leading high-quality legal research and teaching on European security. Security is examined broadly, taking into account the interdependence of external and internal security as part of the European and global operating environment. The position is cross-cutting within the field of law and aims to support research and teaching across different areas of law, while also fostering multidisciplinary perspectives relevant to the position and strengthening cooperation between the Law School’s research groups.
The duties of the Assistant/Associate Professor include:
- conducting high-quality scientific research,
- preparing and leading national and international research projects,
- supervising doctoral researchers,
- teaching in the basic, intermediate or advanced studies of the Law School,
- actively promoting international research cooperation,
- engaging in societal interaction.
The position is filled for a fixed term of four years starting 1 January 2027, or as agreed, due to it being a Tenure Track position. A trial period will apply.
External expert evaluation will be used in the recruitment process. Following the expert evaluation, the Appointments Committee will interview the applicant.
The salary is based on the salary system for teaching and research staff at Finnish universities. It consists of a job-specific component, placed at requirement level 7 (€4,525,66/month), and a personal performance component of 6–50% of the job-specific salary. Depending on the personal performance component, the starting salary is approximately €4,970–€5,650 per month.
The Tenure Track can be entered from the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level. At the end of the term, the appointee’s merits will be evaluated to determine eligibility to proceed to the next level without a separate application process. The criteria, objectives and results required for progression will be agreed upon when signing the contract of employment. Promotion from the Associate Professor level to Professor is based on expert evaluation.

- experience and demonstrated achievements in the acquisition of research funding and in leading research projects,
- demonstrated achievements in international research cooperation and networks,
- good teaching skills and the ability to teach law and to supervise legal research.

- a teaching merits portfolio (teaching portfolio, preparation instructions, PDF)
- a complete list of publications (list of publications, Research Council of Finland website)
- selected publications (no more than 10) with which the applicant wishes to demonstrate their qualification and merits for the post, and a list of the selected publications It is also possible to include submitted manuscripts which have not yet been approved for publication, but which are in the final stages of the evaluation process;
- a work plan (no more than 2 pages) in which the applicant makes a research proposal for the next four years (including the acquisition of external funding and development of a research group), and describes how they intend to achieve the merits required for being promoted to Associate Professor or Professor in the Tenure Track;
- copies of the applicant’s academic degree certificates / diplomas; and copies of certificates / diplomas relating to the applicant’s language proficiency, if not indicated in the academic degree certificates / diplomas.
All application documents (excluding possible publications in Finnish) should be submitted in English in case international experts are used in the evaluation.
