About the position

A temporary 100% position is available at the University of Agder, Faculty of Social Sciences, as Assistant Professor in Development Studies. The position is at the Department of Global Development and Planning, Campus Kristiansand. The duration of the position is 6 months with the possibility of extension up to one year.

Starting date is, at latest, 1st of August 2025, and can possibly be negotiated.

The Faculty of Social Sciences has four departments, the Department of Global Development and Planning, the Department of Information Systems, the Department of Political Science and the Department of Sociology and Social Work.

The Department of Global Development and Planning has 18 permanent employees, one postdoc. and 14 PhDs. The department offers a BA in Planning and Communication; a BA in Global Development Studies; an MA in Global Development, Crisis and Change; and an MA in Planning, Place and Process. We also offer a PhD program in Global Development and Planning (hosted at the Faculty of Social Sciences) and an active research environment, divided into research groups.

Responsibilities

The position will require teaching and course coordination in various courses in our BA and MA programs in development studies, offering critical perspectives on past and current development debates; development theory and practice; and topic like gender, culture, identity, power, and environment in relation to development and in global north-south perspective.

The position may also require student supervision and support of student fieldwork in topics related to development studies at the bachelor and master level.

Required qualifications

The criteria of employment are pursuant to the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts.

Master’s degree in Development studies, or closely-related social science fields with a demonstrated interest in development issues.

Experience teaching (including course coordination) on relevant topics
Experience in supervising student projects (theses) on relevant topics
Fluency in English, both written and oral.

The working language at the University of Agder is Norwegian. The required teaching for this position will be in English, delivered to both Norwegian and international students.

Experience working across cultures and disciplines.
Personal qualities
Ability to adapt to changing needs and requirements, including diverse teaching themes.
Good contact and communication with colleagues and students, including good understanding of and experience managing cultural and personal differences.

The position is remunerated according to the State Salary Scale, salary plan 17.510, code 1009 Assistant Professor NOK 680 000 - 730 000 gross salary per year. Higher salary grades may be considered for particularly well-qualified applicants. A compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
