Job Description

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Division of Environmental Health works to prevent and control illness and injury related to environmental and occupational health risks through outreach, education, surveillance, and enforcement. With staff of 1,000, the Division covers a broad range of subject matter, including oversight of environmental investigations, lead poisoning, injury prevention, occupational health, food safety, childcare, radiation control, recreational and drinking water quality, air quality, climate health, vector control, veterinary public health and pest control. The New York City Department of Health is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Associate Rodentologist to join our Rodent Control team. This role is central to advancing the city's integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, supporting public health, and improving quality of life across all five boroughs ”especially in communities most impacted by rodent-related health risks.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
Assist with ongoing surveillance and mapping of rat populations throughout New York City, contributing to data-driven mitigation strategies.
Assist with designing and implementing community-integrated pest management approaches that are sustainable, equitable, and effective.
Assist with and supports applied research on urban rat ecology, population dynamics, and rodenticide efficacy. Contributes to translating findings into actionable improvements for field operations.
Collaborate with field teams to refine pest control procedures, troubleshoot operational challenges, and enhance service delivery.
Under direction, prepares and conducts presentations to over 170 Bureau of Veterinary and Pest Control team members.

Preferred Skills:
  • Advanced degree in biology, public health, entomology, urban ecology, or a related field preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in rodent ecology, pest management, or environmental health
  • Strong communication and teaching skills
  • Familiarity with IPM principles and urban pest control technologies
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with diverse communities

Minimum Qualifications


1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.

Probationary Period
Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.

Residency Requirement


New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
