Basic Grade Medical Physicist

The Hermitage Medical Clinic is a 112 bed private hospital in Lucan, West Dublin. We have the most advanced diagnostic imaging equipment available today, full Cardiological facilities including a Cardiac Catheterization Suite and Clinical Laboratory services.


We are currently recruiting for a Basic Grade Medical Physicist to join our team in the Hermitage Medical Clinic on a permanent contract.


  • Execution of quality assurance checks on all radiotherapy equipment (Linear accelerators, Treatment planning systems, LDR Brachytherapy, CT, MRI...etc.) in accordance with departmental procedures derived from intentional protocols (IPEM, AAPM, NPL etc.) and maintenance of quality assurance records.
  • Dosimetry measurements for individual patient treatments as required and ensuring that the radiotherapy doses delivered agree to those prescribed according to Galway Clinic protocols (3D conformal, IMRT and VMAT).
  • Maintenance and development of the independent checking programme for monitor unit calculations (Radcalc) and provision of manual calculations for radiotherapy treatments when requested by the radiotherapy staff.
  • Assistance with the calibration of treatment machines and dosimetry equipment (farmer type and parallel plate chambers, OCTAVIUS 4D ...etc.).
  • Provision of scientific and technical services to therapeutic radionuclide treatments (e.g. Xofigo Ra-223).
  • In addition to the above, assist with the scientific and technical support required in Nuclear Medicine, PETCT, Radiopharmacy, and Radiation Protection services in the hospital.
  • Take responsibility for methodology development in some of the areas outlined above;
  • Maintenance of an in-depth knowledge of the quality assurance procedures used in the department.
  • Provision of first line support and troubleshooting service by medical physics in the event of any machine breakdown or failure.
  • Liaison with and provide assistance to field service engineers in the event of any machine breakdown or failure (incl. out of hour's service if necessary).
  • Liaison with and provide assistance to field service engineers over scheduled servicing and maintenance of equipment.
  • Maintenance of up-to-date and detailed records of all machine and equipment downtime, failure, maintenance (corrective and preventative) and FCOs.
  • Participate in Research, Development and Innovation as appropriate.
  • Provision of scientific and technical advice to support the justification to replace medical equipment when required and to contribute to the provision of an active equipment replacement and decommission programme;
  • Contribute, as required to various safety programmes for medical equipment, such as radiation safety programmes and appropriate licensing procedures related to radiotherapy equipment, imaging equipment, radioisotopes, electrical and mechanical safety programmes, decontamination and vigilance programmes;
  • Conduct staff and patient radiation safety training
  • Keep abreast of current developments in the field and ensuring that his/her own knowledge and skills are kept up-to-date by participation in appropriate continuing education and professional development activities
  • Ensure that all departmental reports and hospital records are confidential to the service and to maintain confidentiality in respect of matters which come to your knowledge in the course of your official duty
  • Prepare for and take part in audits and inspections as required (e.g. HIQA, EPA).
  • Assist the Clinic's Radiation Protection Adviser and Radiation Protection officer in the maintenance of the Clinic EPA Licence.
  • Report unusual results or measurements lying outside tolerance to the Head of Department
  • Otherwise participate in the work of the Department as required.


The Candidate:

  • Physics or Engineering Degree
  • Post graduate degree in medical physics
  • Completion of a training scheme or previous experience in a similar role would be an advantage
  • The candidate should have Initiative and an ability to work independently
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Awareness/ Sensitivity toward Patient needs
