BASIC FUNCTION:

Operate a school bus in a safe and efficient manner to ensure the safety of passengers. This position requires continuous use of independent judgment. The essential functions as shown below represent only the key areas of responsibility; specific position requirements will vary depending on the needs of the Transportation Department.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Operate the school bus in a safe, effective, and proficient manner.
  • Provide guidance and training to bus associates in the performance of their respective assignments and duties.
  • Comply with all pre-trip and post-trip procedures and expectations.
  • Report all vehicle damage and/or repair items using established procedures and forms.
  • Ensure interior and exterior cleanliness and appearance of the school bus.
  • Maintain appropriate student behavior on the bus and report policy infractions as appropriate.
  • Assist in providing the necessary safeguards to prevent loss of or damage to property, or failure of mechanical equipment.
  • Assist in the inspection, operation, and use of specialized equipment for students who may have additional accommodations, including wheelchairs, safety vests, etc.
  • Complete Medicare paperwork.
  • Utilize a computer for District and Department email communications and online training courses.
  • Attend professional development.
  • Adhere to District policies/procedures and Department work rules.

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (for every DMPS position):

  • Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.
  • Assist with other duties as may be assigned.


Driver, Class 2 Position Requirements

  • Twenty-one (21) years of age or older.
  • Working for said term (230 day or Academic Calendar) prior to the job posting date and has been an employee since September 30 of the current school year.
  • Experience and ability to work on all DMPS buses and routes.
  • Good attendance record, work history and employee evaluations.
  • Ability to use computer to take required online training.
  • Applicants should also possess:
  • Physical attributes to meet the demands of the position
  • Knowledge of the District’s transportation system
  • Reliability and flexibility in handling a variety of transportation issues and bus driving situations
  • Ability and knowledge of operational aspects of all transportation vehicles and equipment
  • Ability to support the behavioral, health, and safety needs of students, including those with additional accommodations.

Bidders are subject to the following criteria applied for the period of one year prior to the posted closing date of the position:

  • For internal candidates, meets or better rating on employee evaluation criteria established by the district,
  • No more than 10 family/personal leave days used. approved FMLA paid or unpaid will not be counted. All authorized workers Compensation (paid/unpaid) will be taken off the record for the purposes of this bid process.
  • Zero (0) incidents involving formal discipline during the past 12 months from the posting date.
  • Meets all other stated requirements of the job posting and AFSCME Transfer Guidelines.
  • Ability and willingness to operate all District equipment.
  • Must not have any "no call/no show" incidents during the past 12 months from the posting date.
