About you and this role
We are looking for an ambitious bachelor’s or master’s student (m/f) to support our Home & Personal Care business, by doing an internship project for our location in Seneffe, Belgium. The research project will tackle an industry mega-trend called Skinification of beauty. In a nutshell, the project will aim at understanding how Dow’s skin care technologies can benefit other beauty products. The candidate will evaluate the performance of cosmetic ingredients and formulation prototypes using in vitro and in vivo assays. Endpoints such as skin/hair hydration, barrier properties and release of active ingredients will be considered.
Dow is offering great career opportunities in a global and international environment.
The department that will welcome you is the Personal Care Technical Service & Development Team. With deep market insights and in-depth application expertise, we provide technical support to customers and develop innovative solutions that address current and future customer demands. We focus on the development of solutions to address Skin Care, Hair Care and Sun Care needs. You will work in a multifunctional team and interact with colleagues in different regions.
Responsibilities
  • With a background in cell and molecular biology and if possible, biochemistry, you will work on a research and development project aiming at evaluating the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of cosmetic ingredients and prototype formulations. The performance will be assessed using mainly in-house reconstructed human epidermis tissues.
  • After a comprehensive literature review, you will select the most appropriate culture and exposure conditions, and you will analyze specific protein expression by Western blotting, immunofluorescence and ELISA.
  • In parallel, you will also assess the mildness of cosmetic ingredients and finished formulations.
  • Finally, you will evaluate the bioavailability of cosmetic actives using the Franz cells-based diffusion technique.
Qualifications
  • You are currently studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent in Cellular and Molecular Biology.
  • You have a good working knowledge of English.
  • You have experience in working in a lab and safety is your priority.
  • You have experience in cell culture, tissue engineering and biochemistry. Knowledge of skin biology will be a plus.
  • You have a passion for applying innovative ideas and demonstrate curiosity and critical mindset in your activities.
  • You have strong scientific method, statistics and project management skills.
  • You are able to start as of January-March 2025, and for a period of 3 to 6 months (exact date and duration to be discussed based on the rules from the University).
Additional notes
Dow’s internships offer you the opportunity to:
  • Work in a dynamic multifunctional and multicultural team.
  • Contribute to an existing market-driven business.
  • Gain hands-on experience in skin biology, tissue engineering, personal care ingredients and formulation.
