The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) owns and operates public seaport and intermodal facilities in Charleston, Dillon, Georgetown and Greer. Our 900+ employees handle cargo, operate and maintain cargo handling equipment, manage port facilities and operations, and support the port system in a fast-paced 24/7 environment.

The Cargo Handler Trainee learns to prepare railcars for loading and unloading; drive automobiles in and out of railcars; transfer cargo with and without the use of material handling equipment; perform other tasks requiring the use of specialized equipment; and does related work as assigned.


Job Description


Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Assist in the loading and unloading of rail cars and trucks with or without the use of material handling equipment.
  • Transfers, consolidates, stores, and stacks cargo in warehouses and transit sheds in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Prepares railcars for safe movement and for the loading and unloading of automobiles.
  • Drives automobiles in and out of railcars.
  • Transfers cargo to and/or from pallets by hand or with material handling equipment.


Additional Job Responsibilities

  • Performs any other tasks assigned to facilitate the handling of cargo or to ensure safe and clean operating conditions on the facility.

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A valid South Carolina driver’s license is required to operate a Ports Authority owned licensed motor vehicle.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Card under the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) guidelines.

Skills and Abilities

Basic computer skills are required.


Preferred Qualifications

Experienced driver with 1-2 years experience, and/or forklift experience

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Individual must be willing to work flexible schedule including overtime. Schedule of work varies and may include weekend and night shifts. Schedule of work may change with minimal notice.
  • Standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing and pulling.

  • Lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs; overhead lifting may be required.
  • Climbing stairs and/or ladders over 15 ft.
  • Must have 20/20 vision with corrective lenses; peripheral vision/depth perception.
  • Must possess visual capabilities for day and night operations.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for long periods in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to hear spoken and radio communication and audible alarms and warning devices.
  • Must speak clearly for face to face and radio communications.
  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment as required (hard hat, safety shoes, reflective vest, fall protection harness, and hearing protection).
  • Must have the ability to work in a restricted space.
  • Must be able to work at heights 8 feet or more above ground level.
