The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is recruiting several staff to join the Census Field Operations Team for the 2026 Census of Population and Housing as Census Support Team Leaders. These office-based roles are located in Canberra (Belconnen) and Perth (CBD).


About the role


Census Support Team Leaders will guide a team responsible for delivering high quality, frontline support, including managing escalated queries related to Work Health and Safety and Census field operational procedures.

The key duties and responsibilities of the role are to:


  • ensure operations are conducted with the safety and wellbeing of your team and field staff front of mind
  • supervise and develop a high performing team with a focus on Work Health and Safety of Census field staff
  • oversee daily operations and reports and provide escalation support for complex emerging issues or crises that require timely resolution
  • contribute to a supportive and engaged leadership group, focused on promoting a positive workplace culture
  • provide and encourage good customer service through multiple communication channels
  • analyse available data and make considered recommendations to improve procedures and processes
  • build and maintain strong working relationships within the team and with stakeholders
  • monitor changes in the broader work environment that may impact on work area and business objectives
  • evaluate the effectiveness of risk management and risk assessment activities.

What we are looking for


To be successful in the Census Support Team Leader role you will bring most or all of the following skills, qualities, and experience:


  • demonstrated experience leading teams in a customer service environment with a focus on Work Health and Safety, including the ability to train, coach, and mentor less experienced staff
  • a flexible, outcome-focused approach with the ability to achieve business objectives while maintaining high standards of quality
  • strong written, verbal and phone communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and professionally
  • a Work Health and Safety customer-centric mindset and a commitment to delivering responsive, effective services and support
  • well-developed critical thinking and problem solving skills, with the ability to assess issues thoroughly and contribute to practical, innovative solutions
  • excellent coordination and organisational skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities effectively
  • proven ability to communicate, liaise, and build productive relationships with a broad range of stakeholders.
