Civil Intake Coordinator

SUMMARY
Serve as the main point of contact for the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) for all complaints relating to alleged civil rights violations or issues.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Field communications (i.e., phone calls/messages, e-mails, letters) from members of the public and organizations seeking to make a civil rights complaint or seeking information about affirmative civil rights enforcement.
- Develop and maintain a system to track and monitor civil rights cases and complaints.
- Draft and send initial responses or acknowledgements to civil rights complaints.
- Coordinate meetings with civil rights complainants.
- Screen initial complaints for further review and investigation.
- Assist in potential or open civil rights matters, including assisting with witness interviews, conducting initial screening interviews and drafting reports of interviews.
- Assist in the drafting of documents, including requests for information from the targets of civil rights investigations and other sources.
- Review and analyze documents relating to potential and ongoing civil rights investigations.
- Research facts relevant to potential and ongoing civil right investigations.
- Assist with locating victims of unlawful discrimination.
- Develop and maintain contacts with civil rights, community, law enforcement, and other third-party organizations and persons in order to further outreach efforts concerning the USAO's affirmative civil rights practice.
- Attend community meetings, including the Refugee Round table.
- Serve as the point of contact for the Federal Civil Rights Outreach Initiative.
- Identify areas of community concern relating to civil rights issues.
- Coordinate and/or attend meetings with organizations and individuals who are interested in civil rights issues.
- Research and establish contact with organizations and individuals who are interested in civil rights outreach.
- Assist with litigation tasks, including assistance with interviews, depositions, and written requests for information or civil discovery.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- Background in civil rights work is strongly preferred
- Paralegal certificate preferred, but not required.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to work and interact professionally and effectively with all levels of staff and the general public.
- Ability to meet established deadlines and work as a team player in a professional office.
- Skilled in meeting and interacting with complainants and institutional representatives in a professional, courteous, tactful manner.
- Interest in civil rights.
- Strong work ethic, writing skills and attention to detail.
WORK SCHEDULE
Part-time, 20 hours per week. May be required to work additional hours as needed to complete assignment or project.
TRAVEL
The expected travel time is less than 25%.
DRIVING REQUIREMENTS
Must have or be able to attain a valid state driver’s license and be insurable on the company’s automobile insurance policy. Driving, with or without accommodation, may be required when traveling for training and/or short occasional amounts of local driving. The expected driving time is less than 25%.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is primarily performed in a professional office setting, including the normal office equipment (e.g., computer, fax machines, copier) and with a wide variety of people in differing functions, personalities, and abilities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Position consists of sitting for long periods of time, bending, stooping, crouching. Frequently uses hands/fingers for manipulation of keyboard and mouse. Compensation and Benefits package:
- Pay is: $25.00/hr
- SCA Health and Welfare Fringe: $4.93/hr paid toward employee-only medical insurance. Any remainder paid in cash in a bi-weekly paycheck.
