The Opportunity
The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle is seeking a professional, compassionate and highly organised Claims Manager to join the Office of Safeguarding (OoSG).
This important role supports the Diocese in delivering a just, respectful and trauma-informed response to individuals seeking redress for harm alleged to have been suffered as a consequence of past abuse. Reporting to the Safeguarding Manager (Claims Redress), you will manage a portfolio of personal injury and National Redress Scheme matters with a high level of autonomy, professionalism and discretion.
Working within a sensitive and highly confidential environment, you will coordinate claims processes, liaise with legal representatives and key stakeholders, prepare submissions and documentation, and ensure matters progress effectively within required timeframes. You will also contribute to the ongoing promotion of a strong safeguarding culture across the Diocese.
We are seeking a resilient and values-driven professional with strong case management, administration and stakeholder engagement skills, along with the ability to manage competing priorities and sensitive matters with empathy and integrity. Experience in claims management, legal administration, safeguarding, insurance, social services or a related field will be highly regarded.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
A Claims Manager in the Office of Safeguarding (OoSG) provides services intended to promote and deliver a just and equitable response to those who seek redress from the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle (‘Diocese’) for harm alleged suffered as a consequence of past abuse.
The Claims Manager will promote the sacredness and dignity of every individual with whom they interact and endeavour to provide an equity of service to all parties involved.
The Claims Manager has significant levels of autonomy in the case management of personal injury claims assigned to them, in accordance with the ethos of the Catholic Church, the policies, procedures and protocol of the Diocese and the directives of the Safeguarding Manager (Claims Redress).
Skills and Experiences:
QUALIFICATIONS
- Tertiary or post graduate qualifications in legal or paralegal studies, social sciences or related disciplines or a minimum of 3 years equivalent experience.
- A Working with Children Clearance must be obtained from the Office of the Children’s Guardian prior to commencing the role and must remain current during the entire period in the role. It is the position holder’s responsibility to renew their Clearance prior to expiry.
- Current criminal records check
- Drivers Licence
- Postgraduate qualifications in a related field (Desirable)
- Justice of the Peace or notary public (Desirable)
- A capacity to understand, promote and model the mission of the Diocese of Maitland Newcastle and a familiarity with the culture, structures and contemporary ethos of Catholicism in Australia.
- Demonstrated commitment to working in a manner that exemplifies servant leadership in a Catholic ethos.
- Superior decision-making, problem-solving, communication, conflict resolution, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Demonstrated individual resilience and self-awareness operating in an environment where you will be exposed to confronting descriptions of sexual and physical assaults and other forms of abuse.
- Ability to translate complex information into easily understood summary statements and clear communications.
- Generally, superior communication, liaison and conflict resolution skills, notably in record keeping and report writing.
- Demonstrated ability to operate at a high level of accuracy and attention to detail whilst managing multiple simultaneous tasks, prioritising conflicting demands and working to hard deadlines, with a significant level of self-direction and in a high-pressure work environment.
- Understanding of contemporary safeguarding standards and practices, particularly in the Catholic Church in Australia (Desirable).
- Superior skills with using Microsoft Office suite and related software (Desirable).
