Roles and Responsibilities
- Ensure that the provision of a high standard of care to the patients is consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of Bartra Healthcare.
- Ensure recognition of the patient as an individual; ensuring their rights, needs and comfort are given priority during the provision of care.
- Develop relationships with patients, which facilitates their autonomy, informed choice and evidence-based decision-making.
- Promote and maintain patients’ safety and provide quality care through respecting the privacy, dignity, and their rights.
- Maximise the patients’ capacity to exercise personal autonomy and choice. Ø Act as an advocate for the patient to provide support, reassurance and ensuring their views and wishes are taken into consideration.
- Report any matters of concern where patients may be put at risk, where there is a waste of funds or where obligations to them are not being met.

Management Responsibilities
- Be responsible for the following in relation to Governance, Leadership and Management:
- In the absence of the Assistant Director of Nursing, undertake the role and responsibilities of the Person-in-Charge in line with the Health Act 2007, related regulations and the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) standards.
- Support the Registered Provider/Director of Nursing the day to day management of the Place of Work
- Act as a member of the Bartra Healthcare Teams, including, as deemed required by the Registered Provider/Director of Nursing, the Multidisciplinary Care Team, the Risk Management Team, the Incident Management Team and the Infection Control Team.
- Endeavour to keep abreast of recent trends in developments by reading widely.
Delegation of Tasks and Duties
- Be accountable for roles and activities delegated to junior staff, where appropriate.
- Work towards a restraint free environment, with implementation of practices in accordance with the National Policy.
- Ensure that staff rights, including working hours, and responsibilities are complied with in accordance to best practice and legislation.
- Ensure staff receive training in, are familiar with, and implement all policies and procedures of Bartra Healthcare.
- Ensure staff have up-to-date knowledge and skills appropriate to their role to respond to and manage behaviour that is challenging.
Quality and Safety Management System:
- Initiate and participate in inspections, evaluations, audits and quality initiatives.
- Use quality measurements and direct learning outcomes to drive service provision improvements
- Ensure the implementation of health and safety requirements including those relating to the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), clinical and non-clinical waste and management of sharps.
- Ensure appropriate records of patients’ health conditions and treatments are properly maintained daily, including:
- Ensuring that applicable legislation, regulatory requirements, best practice and relevant codes of practice are met in relation to patient records.
Eligibility criteria Qualifications and/or experience
Qualifications
- A registered General Nurse with NMBI
- Evidence of continuous professional development
Desirable:
- Post Graduate Diploma in an area of nursing related to acute nursing
- Management qualifications
- IT Skills
- Audit experience
- Experience dealing with families
- Experience with dealing with MDT
Experience
- Minimum three years post graduate experience with a minimum of one-year experience at CNM level or experience of managing staff and patients
Essential:
- Experience of managing an area, patients and staff
- Ability to coordinate patients care on a daily basis and have a good oversight of the running of the area.
- Manage a cohort of staff and ensure the standards of care are upheld on a daily basis
- Acute nursing experience
- INEWS and deteriorating patient experience
Desirable:
- Experience as a CNM previously

Essential Criteria
- Knowledge of Residential Care legislation and standards including:
- HIQA’s National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland (2016).
- HIQA’s National Standards for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infection (2009)
- HIQA National Standards for Safer Better Healthcare (2012)
- Joint Commission International Accreditation Standards for Long Term Care (2012)
- Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives (2014)
- NMBI Scope of Nursing and Midwifery Practice Framework (2015)
- Demonstrate sound knowledge and clinical nursing practice together with future trends in Care of Older Persons.
- Show evidence of current legislative policies pertinent to Care of the Older Persons.
Essential Knowledge:
- Knowledge and competence to practice effectively through Continuing Professional Development (CPD), following registration.
- Data Protection Act 2003
- Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005
- Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2005 & 2007
- Employment Equality Act 1998-2015
- Freedom of Information Act 2014
- Nurses and Midwives Act 2011
- Educated in or familiar with the concepts and methods of quality improvement.
- Knowledge and understanding of the scope of practice for all Health and Social Care Professionals.
- Knowledge of relevant guidance:
- Protecting Our Future – Report of the Working Group on Elder Abuse (2002).
- Trust in Care. Policy for Health Service Employers on Upholding the Dignity and Welfare of Patient/Clients and the Procedure for Managing Allegations of Abuse against Staff Members (2005).
Desirable:
- Knowledge of organisation of health services and trends nationally and internationally.
- Professionalism in the application of theory to daily practices.
- Critical thinking to be able to recognise resident problems and adapt to changes quickly.
- Ability to recognise shortfalls or limitations of their competencies.
- Ability to source both theoretical and technical information.
