Clinical Psychologist

Permanent Part Time – 15 hours per week

Wellington

The Clinical Psychologist will provide direct clinical support to former refugees, including conducting assessments, offering counselling and therapy, and making referrals to specialist health services. The role also involves advocating for clients in partnership with local and national government agencies. Additionally, the Clinical Psychologist may offer consultation, training, and support to other agencies working with refugee populations.

About the role – Kōrero mō te tūranga

  • Assess client eligibility, determine service needs, and provide culturally appropriate, goal-focused therapeutic interventions.
  • Coordinate client care, involving them in decision-making, and make appropriate referrals to relevant agencies.
  • Advocate for clients’ access to services, promoting self-care programs and mental health services within refugee communities.
  • Offer clinical consultation and support to other agencies, including co-facilitating therapeutic groups and providing supervision.
  • Contribute to service planning, policy development, and offer guidance to refugee programs within Red Cross
  • Engage in self-reflective practice and actively collaborate as part of the broader Red Cross Migration team.

Who are we looking for? – Mā‎ wai te mahi nei?

To thrive in this role, you will need:

  • Strong knowledge of refugee settlement, trauma, grief, loss, and mental health disorders (e.g., PTSD, depression).
  • Relevant qualifications (e.g., degree in counselling) and registration with the New Zealand Psychologists Board, with experience working with diverse populations.
  • Familiarity with New Zealand health and welfare structures and legal frameworks (e.g., Privacy Act, Health Privacy Code).
  • Expertise in therapeutic models for trauma and grief, with the ability to work with interpreters and provide family interventions.
  • Excellent communication, networking, and advocacy skills, collaborating with agencies and facilitating group discussions.
  • Strong problem-solving, independent working, and project management skills, with a commitment to professional growth. Bilingual skills (e.g., Arabic, Spanish) are a plus.
  • Experience in child and adolescent counselling is advantageous but not a requirement
  • A full current drivers licence is required for this role
