The role of Communications Manager is to develop and implement the annual communications and public relations strategy and work continuously on behalf of the organization to ensure communication on activities and outcomes to all stakeholders. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Manager is responsible for preparing and implementing communications and PR activity and materials, and managing external agencies where appropriate, to ensure all activity is completed within the strategy budgets, and accurately represents the destination and brand of Tourism Golden in accordance with the Strategic Plan and annual Marketing Plan.
The Communications Manager will monitor and evaluate the outcomes of media visits and related initiatives, supporting the Executive Director in assessing progress toward strategic goals and objectives. The role also includes cultivating relationships with traditional media outlets, journalists, and content creators through proactive outreach and by attending industry events and trade shows several times a year, ensuring alignment with Tourism Golden’s target markets, audience demographics, and destination management objectives.
The role requires proven experience in public relations, managing both internal and external communications and relationships, and managing external agencies. Excellent inter-personal and written skills are a must, as is knowledge of social media platforms, and proficiency in MS Office or Google G-Suite and Drupal content management system. As in-destination hosting is a primary responsibility, the ability to credibly participate in strenuous outdoor activities such as mountain biking, hiking, skiing or snowboarding is essential.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Strategic Communications
➢ Ensure the Tourism Golden brand is woven into all activities to create consistent brand messaging
➢ Work closely with the Executive Director to ensure all the goals and objectives in the Strategic Plan and annual Marketing Plans are achieved
➢ Determine project budgets and schedules, and deliver accordingly
➢ Monitor and report to the Executive Director on the resulting output of media visits and other activities
➢ Maintain personal appearance and conduct to represent the Organization professionally at all times
➢ Other duties which may arise from time to time to assist the Executive Director in achieving the Organization’s goals as defined in the Strategic Plan
Media & Content Relations
➢ Develop and implement public relations and communications campaigns
➢ Maintain and update the Media Kit and PR tools as required
➢ Create story ideas and news, and ensure regular and appropriate issuing of press releases
➢ Arrange and manage media/content creator visits and travel trade familiarization trips
➢ Host media/content creators and travel trade in the destination
➢ Support existing and identify new appropriate media, sporting, and other events to host/support in the destination
➢ Track, collate and analyze content creators' wrap-up reports
➢ Research & maintain fresh and relevant website destination content, blog, and events content
➢ Work alongside the Social Media & Asset Development Coordinator (who reports to the Executive Director) on content creator collaborations that align with Tourism Golden’s social media calendar and campaigns.
Events & Trade Shows
➢ Attend travel trade shows and media events as identified in the annual marketing plan to build relationships and secure media coverage
➢ Book, prepare materials, and attend identified consumer shows
➢ Identify and develop relationships with adventure & touring travel organizers to encourage inclusion of Golden in their programs and itineraries
Stakeholder Engagement
➢ Develop and implement effective stakeholder communication and engagement
➢ Actively engage with Tourism Golden stakeholders to stay informed about new offerings and product developments.
➢ Create & implement stakeholder workshops & events
Skills, Attributes, Experience & Qualifications
Required:
➢ Post-secondary education in communications and/or marketing, or equivalent work experience
➢ Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in public relations and communications
➢ Proven experience in managing external agencies
➢ Excellent interpersonal communication skills
➢ Proven written skills
➢ Proficiency in MS Office or Google G-Suite
➢ Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines under pressure
➢ Proven experience in tourism or destination PR and media relations
➢ Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
➢ Friendly, outgoing and approachable individual who enjoys meeting and hosting diverse groups of people
➢ Self-motivated team player with a passion for Golden BC and the surrounding area
➢ Comfortable and capable of participating in outdoor activities such as mountain biking, hiking, skiing, or snowboarding for media hosting purposes.
➢ Clean class 5 driver’s license and own vehicle
Desirable:
➢ Experience in event or project management
➢ Experience in working with non-profit organizations
➢ Experience in writing grants or proposals, claims and reports
➢ Experience in the Drupal website content management system
➢ Extensive knowledge of Golden BC
Position type and hours:
This is a regular, full-time position based on a 40-hour work week. The role requires flexibility, with regular evening and weekend work as well as travel several times a year.
