ABOUT THE POSITION
The Community Crisis Navigator (CCN) is a civilian position that supports vulnerable individuals in our community who are experiencing complex social challenges, including mental health concerns, addictions, homelessness, poverty, and intimate partner violence. Working alongside police officers and community partners, the CCN helps connect individuals with appropriate services and supports to promote positive outcomes and prevent unnecessary admittance into the criminal justice system.
Reporting to the Chief of Police or designate, the Community Crisis Navigator provides case management, advocacy, intervention planning, service coordination, and community outreach to support individuals and improve community safety.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Client Support and Case Management
- Assess individual needs and identify appropriate supports and services.
- Provide advocacy, referrals, and assistance navigating community resources.
- Develop and coordinate intervention plans for individuals facing complex social challenges.
- Maintain accurate client records and case management.
2. Police and Community Collaboration
- Collaborate with police officers regarding calls for service involving vulnerable individuals.
- Attend calls for service with police officers when appropriate.
- Participate in coordinated interventions and support planning.
- Work closely with government agencies, non-profits, healthcare providers, and other community organizations.
3*. Community Engagement*
- Participate in case conferences, working groups, and community committees.
- Maintain awareness of available community resources and emerging social trends.
- Support initiatives that strengthen community partnerships and improve service access.
4. Program Administration
- Collect and maintain program and client date.
- Prepare reports and other documentation as required.
- Maintain confidentiality and ensure proper handling of sensitive information.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Undergraduate degree or diploma in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Community Development, Sociology, or other related field.
Experience, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Minimum two (2) years of experience providing direct outreach, intervention, or support services to individuals facing complex social, economic, mental health, addiction, or housing-related challenges.
- Experience working with vulnerable individuals in community-based settings.
- Experience applying strengths-based, relationship-based, and trauma-informed approaches to service delivery.
- Experience and knowledge of supporting culturally and socially diverse individuals and communities.
- Experience and knowledge in motivational interviewing, mentoring, supportive counselling, conflict resolution, and crisis intervention practices.
- Knowledge of community, youth, and family resources, programs, services, and supports within Nova Scotia.
- Knowledge and understanding of issues affecting vulnerable populations, including homelessness, poverty, mental health challenges, and addictions.
- Knowledge of culturally responsive and inclusive service delivery practices.
- Ability to manage difficult client situations and work effectively in crisis or high-stress environments.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage a caseload while maintaining accurate documentation.
- Ability to build positive working relationships with clients, service providers, government agencies, and community partners.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid Nova Scotia Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent from another Canadian jurisdiction.
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate must:
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Successful completion of a Valid Criminal Record Check (CRC) and other background screening requirements.
- Be able to work under stressful conditions.
- Be able and willing to work evening and weekend hours on occasion.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position involves regular interaction with individuals experiencing complex social challenges and crisis situations. The work is performed in office, community, and field settings and may involve attendance at calls for service alongside police officers. Exposure to emotionally challenging situations and sensitive information is expected. Flexibility in scheduling may be required to meet operational needs.
