Job Purpose:
The Current is looking for a reliable, enthusiastic, and team-oriented Cook/Baker Assistant to join our kitchen team. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with fresh ingredients, takes pride in quality food preparation, and thrives in a fast-paced, creative environment.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Prepare and cook a variety of breakfast and lunch menu items, ensuring consistent quality, presentation, and portion control.
· Prepare and bake a variety of fresh products, including breads, muffins, cookies, squares, pastries, cakes, and seasonal specialties.
- Follow daily production schedules to ensure fresh food is available while minimizing waste.
- Prepare ingredients by washing, chopping, measuring, and organizing food items for service.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient kitchen and food preparation area.
- Ensure all food is prepared, stored, labeled, and handled in accordance with food safety regulations and best practices.
- Adhere to all public health, sanitation, and workplace health and safety standards.
- Monitor inventory of food products and kitchen supplies and communicate restocking needs to management.
- Maintain accurate inventory counts of food production items.
- Operate kitchen equipment safely and report any maintenance or equipment concerns as needed.
- Assist in developing new menu items, daily features, and seasonal offerings.
- Maintain consistent food quality, portioning, and presentation standards.
- Complete daily cleaning, opening, and closing duties as required.
- Work collaboratively with café staff to support efficient daily operations and provide excellent customer service during service periods.
- Assist with receiving, rotating, and properly storing deliveries using FIFO (First In, First Out) inventory practices.
Qualifications
- Previous cooking/baking, or commercial kitchen experience in a café, restaurant, or food service environment.
- Knowledge of food safety regulations, sanitation practices, and safe food handling procedures.
- Food Handler Certification.
- Experience preparing breakfast and lunch menu items in a fast-paced environment is considered an asset.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple tasks efficiently.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg (55 lbs) and stand for extended periods.
- Reliable, dependable, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
- Flexibility to work mornings, weekdays, and occasional special events as required.
