About the Role
Swinburne University is seeking a dedicated and experienced Counselling Manager to lead our student counselling services across our three Australian campuses. This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Swinburne Health Service and plays a vital role in supporting the mental wellbeing of our students. The Counselling Manager will be responsible for the effective leadership, management, and delivery of high-quality, inclusive, and responsive counselling services that contribute to student retention and success.
As a senior member of our multi-disciplinary Health Service team, which includes General Practitioners, Registered and Enrolled Nurses, Counsellors, a Psychiatrist, Administrative staff, Health Promotion professionals, and a student Peer Support Group, the Counselling Manager will provide clinical leadership and supervision to counselling staff. This role also involves managing complex clinical cases, contributing to strategic planning, and leading service development and innovation initiatives.
The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders. They will also be responsible for convening meetings with university-employed and contracted mental health practitioners and may be required to provide occasional support to the Medical Practice Manager when needed.
About You
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:
- Demonstrated experience managing a multidisciplinary mental health team and delivering counselling services
- Proven experience in service and continuous improvement in an allied, mental or other health setting
- Proven capability in risk assessment, crisis intervention, and case management
- High-level understanding of therapeutic approaches, supervision models, and mental health issues affecting higher and vocational education students
- Experience contributing to strategic planning initiatives and representing mental health services on university-wide committees or working groups to inform policy, service development, and student wellbeing strategies.
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counselling, or Mental Health Nursing
Registration with a relevant professional association
