Location: The successful candidate may be based in one of the following Greenpeace Organizations: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Poland and the Netherlands. *


We offer competitive NGO level salary and benefits, the specifics of which depend on the location where the successful candidate(s) will be based. We aim to share this information with candidates before reaching the offer stage.


  • Other locations that have existing independent Greenpeace National/Regional organisations might be considered on a case by case basis, depending on the hosting capacity availability and compliance, however please note that we can not guarantee hosting ability in every location before we fully assess the situation.


Internal GP network candidates from NROs (not current GPI staff) will be considered on a case by case basis as we cannot guarantee hosting capacity for GPI staff in every location where there is a GP office. We will aim to explore possibilities for qualified GP network candidates.

The Role


The Crew Manager ensures that the ships are suitably staffed according to Greenpeace ship’s operational, technical and campaign requirements, by strategic workforce planning, selection, and recruitment of maritime professionals. They act as a key liaison for crew matters overseeing planning, logistics, maritime training and career development. Actively engages and collaborates with various stakeholders in GPI Operations department as well as other Greenpeace NRO’s in all relevant areas.


What you will do:


Ship Crewing and Recruitment

  • Responsible to ensure ships are suitably staffed to Greenpeace ships operational and technical requirements, by selecting crew for relevant roles after liaising with various stakeholders in GPI and NROs taking into account contractual requirements
  • Leads and manages all recruitment efforts for all maritime roles in line with existing hiring practices.
  • Ensures alignment with GPI P&C policy and practice.


Crew Logistics

  • Responsible for ensuring that the ship's crew have all necessary and valid documentation and certification for travel, health, and work assignment.
  • Responsible for ensuring all crew are timely informed about their embarking/ disembarkation plans and update them on any changes. Responsible for all crew travel arrangements and logistics and department staff travel to ships.


Crew HR management, maritime training and policy alignment

  • Oversees crew on board management processes and HR policies and procedures, in alignment with the GPI P&C unit.
  • Responsible for guiding the captains in responding to and resolving personnel issues, in line with the Crew Unit code of conduct, seagoing personnel HR policies, Dutch labour law and international regulations in line with JEDIS principles. Escalate issues to Head of Crew as necessary.


Networks and communications

  • Responsible for Informing crew with relevant organisational and campaign updates, as well as information on assignments.
  • Actively liaises with campaign, actions, and operations to inform them of crew changes and manages project specific crew requirements.
  • Develops and maintains contacts with crewing departments in other NGOs, certified agencies and training institutions to support recruitment, compliance, and workforce development.


Emergency support

Supports Head of Crew by sharing availability of support for all seagoing personnel in order to provide emergency support as and whenever necessary.

Skills and Experience

  • Extensive HR experience which includes engagement in international organisations
  • Experience in working with non-governmental and/or campaigning organisations
  • Good interpersonal skills and experience in operating within an international and multicultural environment
  • Experience in ship crewing/ manning and personnel management
  • Understanding and experience of ship crewing requirements, regulations, conventions and certification
  • Understanding of Dutch labour law and regulations
  • Knowledge of written and spoken Dutch is desirable
  • Greenpeace ship experience is preferable
  • Ability to work effectively in a high pressure environment
  • Willingness to take personal initiative and responsibility and to find novel solutions to problems.
  • Experience in budget management and crew payroll software
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
