I. JOB STATEMENT:
The Custodial Staff is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment throughout the York University Student Centre (YUSC). This role involves performing routine and specialized cleaning tasks in accordance with established health and safety standards. The Custodial Staff plays a vital part in ensuring the physical space remains in excellent condition for students, staff, tenants, and visitors. The ideal candidate is reliable, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and committed to high standards of cleanliness and professionalism.
2. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
A. Operations
- Perform daily cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting of all public and staff areas, including restrooms, lounges, offices, meeting rooms, stairwells, and elevators.
- Replenish restroom supplies and maintain sanitation standards throughout the building.
- Handle garbage and recycling removal in accordance with YUSC sustainability policies.
- Respond promptly to spills, accidents, or urgent cleaning needs.
- Operate cleaning equipment such as floor scrubbers, buffers, and vacuums safely and efficiently.
- Report maintenance issues or damages to the Facilities Manager promptly.
- Assist with the set-up and teardown of furniture and equipment for events, meetings, and programs.
- Follow all cleaning checklists, safety protocols, and departmental procedures.
- Maintain cleaning equipment in good working condition; notify manager of any equipment malfunction or required maintenance.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager or Supervisor.
B. Financial & Administration
- Ensure that all cleaning practices follow safety guidelines and comply with public health regulations.
- Use cleaning products and chemicals in a safe and responsible manner, following manufacturer instructions.
- Maintain safe storage of supplies and equipment in designated custodial closets.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while on duty.
- Maintain clear and hazard-free walkways and entrances, particularly during inclement weather.
C. Human Resources
- Communicate clearly and respectfully with team members, supervisors, and building users.
- Assist colleagues in completing joint tasks or responding to emergencies.
- Participate in regular team meetings and training sessions as required.
- Support YUSC’s commitment to accessibility, equity, and inclusion by maintaining clean and welcoming spaces for all.
3. RELATIONSHIPS:
The Custodial Staff reports directly to the Facilities Manager and works as part of the larger Facilities team. The role requires regular interaction with other departments, tenants, service providers, and members of the YUSC and York Federation of Students (YFS) communities. Professional and respectful collaboration is expected at all times.
4. WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
- Part-time position scheduled during the weekend day shifts; flexibility may be required during events or peak times.
- Requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, and moving equipment and supplies throughout the shift.
- Frequent exposure to cleaning agents, waste materials, and potentially hazardous conditions.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Work may involve indoor and occasional outdoor duties, including seasonal responsibilities such as snow and ice removal.
- Must wear required uniforms and safety gear while on duty.
5. POLICIES & EXPECTATIONS
- Adhere to all YUSC policies, including those related to health and safety, workplace conduct, and confidentiality.
- Follow department protocols regarding cleaning standards, timekeeping, and reporting.
- Maintain professionalism, punctuality, and accountability during all shifts.
- Participate in mandatory training sessions, including WHMIS, first aid, and health & safety workshops.

7. JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous custodial or cleaning experience in a commercial, institutional, or similar setting is an asset.
- Knowledge of proper cleaning techniques, equipment uses, and chemical handling.
- Ability to work independently and follow instructions with minimal supervision.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Physically fit and capable of performing repetitive tasks and lifting heavy objects.
- Demonstrated reliability and a strong work ethic.
- Willingness to work night shifts and occasional weekends or holidays as needed.
- Must be able to maintain discretion and handle situations involving confidential information.
