About the role

Are you a cyber security professional ready to lead detection, response, and innovation in a dynamic, mission-critical environment? Curtin University is seeking an experienced Cyber Security Operations Specialist to deliver pragmatic, people-focused, cyber security operations services. As a cyber security operations subject matter expert, you will assist in the development and ongoing support of capabilities, to protect the University from cyber threats and enable Curtin to expand and deliver its services.

In this job, you will work closely with internal IT teams, third-party vendors, government agencies, and various parts of the University concerned about security. The Cyber Security Operations team are actively engaged in blue-teaming activities and will provide risk-aware decision making, monitor and develop security incident prevention, detection and response solutions and report on suspected ICT and information security related policy breaches.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead proactive security monitoring, threat detection, and incident response activities using advanced tools and methodologies.
  • Investigate and analyse security incidents to assess impact, identify root causes, and drive effective mitigation strategies.
  • Administer and optimise enterprise security technologies to enable coordinated, automated threat prevention and response.
  • Develop and maintain incident response playbooks, integrating automation through SOAR platforms to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Mentor junior staff and foster a high-performance, knowledge-sharing team environment within cybersecurity operations.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to improve security posture, ensure policy compliance, and support audit and governance processes.
  • Be prepared to respond to security incidents 24/7, which may involve working outside of regular business hours.
Selection Criteria:
  • Relevant qualifications and certifications in cyber security operations, including industry credentials (e.g. CISSP, CCSP, ECIH, Security+, CSA+) or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience in ICT security systems, including their design, implementation, and management in academic or research settings.
  • Deep knowledge of cybersecurity standards and incident response, with the ability to apply these in teaching, research, or institutional contexts.
  • Understanding of risk management and security architecture, aligned with academic and research governance.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in academic teams, fostering innovation in research and learning environments.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and organisational skills, with a record of presenting complex topics and contributing to curriculum or strategic initiatives.
Desirable:
  • Membership of information security related professional associations.
Role Requirements:
  • Current Permanent Australian working rights. Please note that visa sponsorship will not be supported for this role.
  • Willing to undertake a National Police Clearance, and background, integrity, and reference checks to Curtin’s satisfaction. It is also desirable that applicants hold the willingness and ability to apply for an Australian Government Security Clearance.
