Job Summary
The Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences is seeking a Department Head. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences (FWCS) at Oregon State University provides comprehensive research, education, and outreach programs related to conservation biology and managing fish and wildlife resources. We aim to give people the knowledge to make wise decisions on conservation, sustainable use, and ecosystem restoration. We accomplish this through undergraduate and graduate education across the state and online, scholarly research, extension education, and public outreach.
The Department Head provides overall administrative leadership for the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences in all its functions. The individual leads a multi-faceted department with interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research programs in applied and basic sciences, on-campus and online undergraduate and graduate degree and certification programs, and public engagement. The Department Head oversees more than 35 faculty including Extension, 80 courtesy faculty including USGS cooperative faculty, 130 graduate research assistants and teaching assistants, 14 instructors, and 12 administrative personnel, annual research expenditures that average over $10 million dollars per year and oversees three off campus sites. The department offers MS, PhD, and Professional Science Masters degrees, three graduate certificates, one bachelor’s, and two minors, many of which can be completed online through Ecampus.
As a key contact person, the Department Head must interpret the dynamics of ecosystems and the interrelationships between humans and fish and wildlife; communicate the department’s goals and vision effectively to faculty, staff, industry groups, public agencies, community colleges and secondary schools and private organizations; and establish programs and processes that address this vision and effectively lead faculty toward accomplishment of the department’s goals. As the chief administrative officer, the Department Head engages with the administrations of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Oregon State University.
The Department Head will ensure that all people have equal employment and program participation opportunities regardless of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age, marital status, disability, and disabled veteran or Vietnam-era veteran status.
College of Agricultural Sciences faculty are committed to enhancing student success by engaging students in quality opportunities related to their academic program, research, internships, global studies, and other experiential learning. Positions primarily responsible for extension and outreach are committed to learner success through programming appropriate for diverse audiences. The Department Head is expected to embody and advance the principles and practices conveyed in the CAS CARE Commitment document.

The successful candidate must be tenured or eligible for tenure within the Department and have demonstrated abilities in scholarship and the potential for successful academic leadership as shown by their record of professional service.
Any hiring with indefinite tenure will be subject to a successful out-of-cycle tenure review process: https://facultyaffairs.oregonstate.edu/out-cycle-tenure-review-procedure

The College of Agricultural Sciences is Oregon’s principal source of agricultural and food systems knowledge and a significant source of knowledge regarding environmental quality, natural resources, life sciences, and rural economies and communities worldwide. The college’s 14 departments (three of which are joint with the College of Science) provide undergraduate and graduate education, leading to 13 baccalaureate and 30 graduate degrees and extended education programs throughout Oregon and beyond. With over 3,000 students, 280 professorial faculty, and exceeding $160 million per year in expenditures, the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS) is a complex organization. In addition to the main campus, CAS has faculty-located Branch Experiment Stations in 13 agroecozones across the state and Extension Faculty in each county. CAS is well known for its collaborations among state and federal agencies. Our researchers and Extension faculty work closely with agency partners in EPA, USDA ARS, USGS, US Forest Service, US Navy, USDOE, NIH, NOAA, NMFS, USFWS, as well as state agencies, local governments, and professional organizations. CAS supports faculty in the College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Health, and the Chemistry, Microbiology, and Statistics departments in the College of Science.

Regional industries and commodity groups are also important partners. Oregon’s remarkable agricultural diversity, with more than 220 commercial commodities, means that many commodity groups depend on OSU research and development to improve their varieties and expand their markets.
