The Department of Justice is seeking qualified candidates to fill the newly created role of Deputy Director for its Legal Services Branch within the CrownLaw Division.
Legal Services Branch (LSB) is the Government of Manitoba’s full service in-house civil law office of about 100 staff, including 70 lawyers. It provides a complete range of high quality legal services to all government departments, and to agencies, boards, commissions and corporations that do not have their own legal counsel.
LSB’s work enables the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Manitoba to fulfill the constitutional and statutory responsibility of Chief Legal Advisor to Government, and as the guardian of the public interest with respect to matters of civil law. This results in a varied work experience that is unique, challenging, and highly engaging.
Duties:
The Deputy, working in close partnership with the Branch Director, will share responsibility for the overall management of the Branch and its legal work. In addition, the Deputy will take the lead in implementing the Branch’s strategic vision, overseeing the articling student program, and maintaining strong client relationships.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Proven ability as a leader with a commitment to create, support and sustain a diverse environment that enables staff to achieve results and to develop for the future
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, especially to leverage opportunities for innovation, find creative solutions to issues, and successfully manage change
- Experience translating strategic priorities into clear operational and business plans and experience with strategic performance management and measurement systems (e.g. Key Performance Indicators, Balanced Scorecards)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience managing internal and external stakeholder relationships
- Political acumen demonstrated through experience providing strategic advice to senior leaders on complex topics and sensitive issues
- Experience providing leadership and supervision to practicing lawyers
- Experience leading clients to build relationships with Indigenous people and implementing the principles of reconciliation
Desired:
- Management experience with responsibility for human and financial resources
