Job Summary: The Diesel Mechanic Apprentice will learn to perform inspections, preventative maintenance, and mechanical repairs on heavy-duty diesel trucks under the guidance of experienced technicians. This is a paid apprenticeship position where Whimsy Intermodal will cover the cost of the apprentice's diesel technology schooling, providing a clear pathway from training to a full Diesel Mechanic Technician role. The apprentice will develop the skills needed to ensure all vehicles are maintained to the highest safety and performance standards while following DOT regulations and company policies.

Essential Duties (performed under supervision, with increasing independence as skills develop):

• Assist with diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing diesel engines, including fuel systems, transmissions, and cooling systems
• Perform preventative maintenance, such as oil changes, filter replacements, and system checks
• Support safety inspections and help prepare safety documents as required by FMCSA, company policies, and applicable regulations
• Assist in repairing, replacing, or welding defective parts, components, or systems
• Learn to use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify engine issues
• Help test repaired vehicles to ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications and safety regulations
• Follow work orders and complete assigned tasks with guidance from senior technicians
• Attend and successfully progress through the sponsored diesel technology program

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required
• Enrollment in, or willingness to enroll in, an accredited diesel technology program (tuition paid by Whimsy Intermodal)
• Basic mechanical aptitude and a strong interest in heavy-duty truck systems including brakes, electrical, and hydraulics
• Eagerness to learn diagnostic tools and software for diesel engines
• Willingness to learn welding and cutting torch operation
• Punctual and reliable work attendance
• Strong attention to quality and commitment to safety standards
• Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and requirements
• Ability to follow instructions and take constructive feedback from senior technicians
• Valid driver's license (CDL not required, but a plus)
