Working as a Direct Support Professionals (DSP) in a residential (group home) setting you will be responsible for helping adults ages 18 and older who have intellectual disabilities or mental health diagnosis with daily functions that many take for granted, i.e. cooking/preparing meals, assisting in cleaning, group activities, taking them out into the community etc.

Required Skills:

Ability to support individuals by providing assistance and training in all areas of daily living
General understanding of different mental health/ intellectual disability diagnoses
Participation in the Individual Support planning process
Ensuring clients are in good health and maintaining their hygiene
Teaching safety precautions in the home and in community integration
Addressing needs of the individual by communicating with co-workers and the supervisor
Support and assist individuals in maintaining their home (cooking meals/cleaning)
Medication administration/monitoring
Comply with all Waiver requirements
Completes all required trainings
Comply with program Incident Management, risk Management and quality management policies.

Qualifications:

18 years of age or older, Minimum high school diploma or GED and 6 months + experience working with adults with diminished mental capacity i.e. Intellectual Disabilities, Mental Health Diagnoses, Dementia, Alzheimer's OR an Associate degree in Human services related field (experience with population preferred)
A valid driver's license

Training:

Orientation to their responsibilities, the daily operation of the home and policies and procedures of the home before working with individuals or in their appointed positions.
Direct Support Professionals who are employed for more than 40 hours per month shall have at least 24 hours of training relevant to human services annually.
Direct Support Professionals shall have training in the areas of intellectual disability, the principles of integration, rights and program planning and implementation, within 30 calendar days after the day of initial employment or within 12 months prior to initial employment.
Direct Support Professionals shall be trained before working with individuals in general fire safety, evacuation procedures, responsibilities during fire drills, the designated meeting place outside the building or within the fire safe area in the event of an actual fire, smoking safety procedures if individuals or staff persons smoke at the home, the use of fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and fire alarms, and notification of the local fire department as soon as possible after a fire is discovered.
Direct Support Professionals shall be trained annually by a fire safety expert in the training areas specified above.
Direct Support Professionals and at least one person in a vehicle while individuals are being transported by the home, shall be trained before working with individuals in first aid techniques.
Direct support Professionals and drivers of and aides in vehicles shall be trained within 6 months after the day of initial employment and annually thereafter, by an individual certified as a trainer by a hospital or other recognized health care organization, in first aid, Heimlich techniques and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
