TRIO Upward Bound Director
TRIO Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.
Upward Bound serves high school students from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
Responsibilities include:
- Oversee programs to achieve Upward Bound program objectives.
- Complete all necessary assessment and program reporting as directed by program regulations
- Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate project staff and summer staff;
- Develop and implement services and activities to meet Upward Bound objectives;
- Direct participant recruitment and selection of students;
- Administer evaluative assessments to better meet participant’s needs and monitor participants’ academic progress;
- Facilitate educational, social, cultural, or life-skills programming
- Maintain a close working relationship with on-campus offices such as Admissions, Residence Life, Student Success Center, etc.; Maintain a close working relationship with project staff and target school counselors and teachers;
- Coordinate with third-party employers, community organizations, educational & career resources to meet participant needs throughout entire academic year;
- Chaperone various cultural and educational outings, including college visits;
- Maintain participant files in adherence to the record-keeping policy;
- Consistently update StudentAccess database to facilitate completion of the Annual Performance Report;
- Prepare and submit the Annual Performance Report as required by the U.S. Department of Education;
- Evaluate and improve programming services using a continuous improvement model and prepare reports and data presentations for a variety of audiences in collaboration with program staff.
- Prepare college readiness promotional materials and press releases for area media;
- Administer the annual budget;
- Prepare, develop, and implement grant writing of multi-year grants to secure funding for new and continuing projects;
- Other duties as assigned to ensure effective oversight of the TRIO Upward Bound program.
Qualifications:
Master’s Degree required from an accredited institution in counseling, education, academic administration, or a related field.
Experience in planning, implementing, and assessing services such as personnel management, budget management, teaching, academic advising and mentoring students ideally with students of a similar demographic than those served by TRIO programs (economically and/or educationally disadvantaged students). Demonstrated ability to work with students from a variety of backgrounds. Ability to plan, organize, and implement responsibilities effectively. Program assessment experience. Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, other professionals, staff, and the public. Upward Bound program management experience preferred. Experience writing multi-year grants preferred.

Preferred Requirements: Individuals who have been recipients of TRIO services in the past, or who are from a similar background as students served are encouraged to apply. Preference may be given to candidates from similar economic and educational backgrounds.
The TRIO Upward Bound program is a program within the Student Success Center, which is part of the Academic Affairs division of Northern State University. This is a full-time, 11-month, benefited position. The project is granted funded with intents to apply for continued funding.

This position is a part of the Student Success Center at NSU which includes professionals in tutoring, academic advising, academic support, career services, testing services, the American Indian Circle Program, TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO Upward Bound, TRIO McNair, and supplemental instruction.
