Disease Intervention Specialist Trainee - Office Of Epidemiology - Kanawha Co.

Nature of Work

Under close supervision, the Disease Intervention Specialist Trainee performs entry-level disease intervention services, investigating assigned STD and STD/HIV co-infected cases by locating, interviewing, and re-interviewing index partners, identifying sexual and needle-sharing contacts, notifying individuals of potential exposure, offering HIV testing, and ensuring appropriate treatment. Responsibilities include documenting investigation results, reviewing patient records to verify proper STD treatment, and recommending modifications to providers as needed. The trainee will maintain regular communication with private providers, laboratory personnel, and health departments to enhance testing practices, provide HIV rapid testing, conduct case reporting, and gather diagnostic and treatment data. In cases of high morbidity or staff shortages, they may assist in other jurisdictions, offering technical assistance and consultation to local health departments and medical professionals to ensure consistent regional performance. Additionally, participation in community planning events, HIV/AIDS testing initiatives, and professional conferences related to STD intervention and treatment is expected, with a requirement to attend at least one conference and one training annually and disseminate insights to the Division of STD, HIV, Viral Hepatitis, and TB. A valid driver’s license and travel within assigned areas are required, along with other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Training: Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

Substitution: Full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience in STD/HIV control, nursing, or social services and/or public health case management and investigation may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required training.

Special Requirement: A valid driver's license and the availability of an automobile is required.

Other Information

Full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience as an investigator in a Human Services/Behavioral Services may substitute for education or experience.
