We are now looking for
A Doctoral researcher
in structural biology in the research group of Rajaram Venkatesan, Research unit Protein and Structural Biology (PSB) at the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine.
PSB Research Unit's focuses on three broad overlapping themes: large protein complexes and networks, molecular mechanisms of biology and disease, and synthetic biology, covering all aspects of protein science, with an emphasis on structural and biophysical studies. The unit provides an excellent environment for doing cutting edge research in protein science and structural biology with access to state-of-the-art facilities located at Oulu, Finland, as well as across Europe.
About the job
Applications are invited for a doctoral researcher position in the research group of Rajaram Venkatesan in the Protein and Structural Biology Research Unit, at the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine. The Venkatesan research group works on the structural and functional aspects of enzymes and protein complexes involved in lipid metabolism and transport in pathogenic organisms. The research project concerns the study of mycobacterial mammalian cell entry (Mce) complexes and associated proteins to understand their assembly, structure and function. The main tasks of the research project include but is not limited to working on the structural characterization of the components of the Mce complexes using a variety of biophysical and structural methods.
- As a doctoral researcher, your main task is to carry out your doctoral research–including designing and performing experiments, collecting data, analyzing results, and writing your dissertation–as well as to complete your doctoral studies.
- You will also contribute to other project-related tasks such as applying for research funding and engaging in societal outreach.
- In addition to your research, you will participate in the shared activities of the research group. PSB research unit and the Faculty. You will also contribute to teaching, but this will not exceed 5% of your total working time.

Who are you?
In order to succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you:
- A Master's degree in protein science, biochemistry, biotechnology or a related field. The degree must have been completed before the start of the doctoral researcher's work.
- Fluent in written and spoken English
- Good IT and interpersonal skills
- Meet the requirements of the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS) to apply for the doctoral study rights
We also appreciate
- Previous demonstrated experience in structural, molecular and microbiology research
- Experience in working with membrane proteins
- Able to work independently and in a collaborative research environment
- A proactive working approach
Salary
The position is fixed-term for 3 years as of 01.01.2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The salary will be based on the levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The starting gross salary will be approx. 2600-3200 € per month (before taxes). A trial period of 6 months is applied to the position.
