The Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance offers four Bachelor programmes, thirteen Master programmes, as well as several continuing education courses. It also includes the Doctoral School in Law and the Doctoral School in Economics and Finance. Around 2,300 students from 97 different nationalities are enrolled at the Faculty. Academic staff from different nationalities teach at the Faculty, supported by practitioners from the field, visiting scholars and guest professors. The Department of Law of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance of the University of Luxembourg is looking for a PhD candidate under fixed-term contract to conduct research in European Law.

Your role

The doctoral researcher will be working under the supervision of Professor Dr. Jörg Gerkrath. The doctoral researcher’s main task will be to prepare a doctoral thesis in field of Single Market Law including cross-border interdependencies and/or the implementation and enforcement of the relevant EU rules at the national, Luxembourg level.

The PhD will be conducted in the context of the Doctoral Training Unit “Green and Digital Transitions in the Single Market” (GREITMA) (https://www.uni.lu/research-en/research-projects/greitma/). The doctoral candidate will benefit from specific PhD training but will also contribute to the teaching of classes ranging from one to three hours per week, of small group teachings, tutorials or Moot Court training. The work will be undertaken at the University of Luxembourg. It is also possible to be jointly-supervised with another university.

Your profile

We are looking for a candidate with demonstrated competencies in European Law and interest in the interactions between EU and national law.

In particular, the following requirements apply:

• A Master’s Degree in law
• Have the linguistic skills to evolve in a multilingual environment: fluency in French, good understanding of English and possibly a third language
• Excellent communication and writing skills in French

The submission of a detailed (2-3 p.) description of a potential research topic is seen as an asset. Possible topics include ‘Luxembourg as a ‘laboratory’ for free movement’, The implementation of Single Market Law through national Luxembourg ‘autonomous agencies’, Internal Market Law and climate litigation
• A detailed curriculum vitae with list of publications and copies thereof, if applicable
• A transcript of concluded university studies
• The name, current position and relationship to the applicant, of two referees
