We are now looking for a
Doctoral Researcher
to join us in the M3S Research Group at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. The M3S unit conducts research at a high international level and publishes widely in top journals and conferences. We research software-based systems and services with innovative applications in Automotive, Health and Wellness, and Cyber-Physical Systems. We utilise enabling technologies and platforms such as Artificial Intelligence, Edge/Cloud, IoT, Digital Twins, and 5G/6G Networks to achieve our research goals.
About the job
The doctoral researcher will join the Research Council of Finland project "PastSense: Digital Twinning Methods for Illuminating Insights in Classical Archaeology". The project develops software engineering methods for interoperability frameworks and the automatic creation of digital twins, focusing on the use case of classical archaeology. These interdisciplinary software engineering methods enable the visualisation and reconstruction of different situations in the ancient past.
As a doctoral researcher, you will be part of a multidisciplinary research group consisting of computer scientists, software engineers, archaeologists, cultural anthropologists, and museum professionals. Your research focuses on applications of remote sensing and digital twinning, building practical artefacts and demonstrations, and conducting quantitative and qualitative evaluations of the built artefacts. The field of our research is in the intersection of computational archaeology, pervasive/ubiquitous computing, and software engineering.

Who are you?
In order to succeed and enjoy the position, we require from you:
- Master's degree in the field of computer science, software engineering, or other related ICT field. A Master's degree must have been completed before the start of the doctoral researcher's work
- Demonstrated ability and motivation for doctoral studies in an interdisciplinary research group
- Ability to work as a team member and bring in new perspectives and ideas
- Fluent in written and spoken English. Other languages are beneficial and should be listed in the application
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and willingness to explain technical matters to a non-expert audience
- Basic knowledge of 3D modelling, game development (Unreal Engine 5 or similar), or AR/VR applications, or demonstrated ability to learn such tools, such as a background in image processing or 2D/3D signal processing
- You must apply for the right to study for a doctoral degree at the beginning of your employment in accordance with the requirements of the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS). Please note that your doctoral programme is expected to be in Information Technology and Electrical Engineering
We also appreciate
- Other language skills (Finnish, Italian, Latin, etc), even at the basic level of knowledge
- Studies, hobbies, or personal interests related to history, archaeology, culture, and museums
- Previous experience with LiDAR, Radar, photogrammetry, or similar remote sensing technologies
- Ability to demonstrate your technical skills through demonstrations and showcases; please provide examples of your possible previous projects in the CV and/or research plan
Previous experience in archaeology or history is not required, but will be considered a benefit. The project will include field trips to Campanian archaeological sites in Italy and, if possible, to other destinations in Europe.
Salary
The position is fixed-term for 4 years as of 1.9.2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The salary will be based on the levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The starting gross salary will be approx. 2800-3200 € per month (before taxes). A trial period of 6 months is applied to the position.
