About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga
We have a Permanent, Full-Time role available to support our Auckland Central-East region, based in our Maungawhau | Mt Eden Office. This role is to start in January 2025.
As an Early Intervention Teacher, you will play a critical role in our region’s Learning Support team by:
- Providing high quality learning support in line with the Ministry’s practice framework He Pikorua guiding principles, strands, and goals of Te Whariki: Early Childhood Curriculum, and Te Whariki a te Kohanga Reo.
- Building and strengthening the capability of those who are best placed to support children’s’ learning such as parents, teachers and whānau | families.
- Understanding the families’ needs, collaboratively planning, supporting, and monitoring the implementation of intervention plans.
- Supporting transition points in the child’s learning pathway, such as transition into early childhood education and to school as required.
- Working as part of a trans-disciplinary team where a child’s needs are complex.
Salary range: $69,966 - $118,450 per annum + 3% kiwi saver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

About you | Mōhou ake
To be successful, you will need:
- A Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood).
- A post-graduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching: Early Intervention or the ability to attain this within four years of beginning in the position.
- A minimum of three years teaching experience and a deep knowledge of child development, learning and behaviour.
- An understanding of a range of needs and disabilities and their implications for daily functioning in family life and for teaching and learning in the context of early childhood and family homes.
- The ability to develop and interact effectively with people of other cultures focusing on relationship and recognising their identity, language, and culture as a source of strength.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with ākonga | learners, whānau | families and kaiako | teachers across a diverse range of settings.
- The ability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangatawhenuatanga.
- A full driver’s licence.
- The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori. You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.

At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally, and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whanau.
Learning Support is a critical part of the Te Mahau | Te Tai Raro (North) Group in the Ministry. We ensure that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education. Our Learning Support specialists work closely with families, whānau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Māori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning outcomes and promote social inclusion.
