About the Location
Situated in the sunny eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island, the Bay of Plenty really is just that, offering vast golden sand beaches, bush clad mountains, lush farmlands and more. Its pleasant climate means that the area has become a favourite for holiday makers, retirees and those looking for a different lifestyle outside of the main cities.
About the Service
The Whakatane Hospital Emergency Department provides 24/7 emergency and acute care to the people of the Eastern Bay of Plenty. This region of the Bay of Plenty has a predominantly Māori population and as such is an opportunity to experience living and working in a community with strong cultural bonds to the local Iwi. The department sees around 25,000 presentations per annum of which around 22% are admitted to hospital.
Over the past four years, the department has invested in the growth of medical, nursing and allied health team members. This includes increasing the ED medical staff base, training and recruiting to advanced nursing roles along with encouraging the development of a multidisciplinary team to best meet the needs of patients. Medical staff working within the department cover a 24/7 roster. This position is advertised as part time however there is flexibility to consider options around FTE. The department has been approved as a site for advanced trainee placement and as such we are looking forward to further developing education and training programmes for junior medical staff.
About you
The ideal candidate for this position will have a desire to work in a smaller secondary care hospital with the opportunity to practice alongside other specialist services such as general medicine, paediatrics, surgery and mental health to deliver innovative and responsive care to people presenting to the ED. A strong skill base in emergency medicine and urgent care, along with interests in particular subspecialty emergency care such as paediatrics would be beneficial. This position will be of interest if you have ever thought, “I wonder what it would be like to work somewhere with interesting and varied clinical demands and the time to get to know patients, the team I work with and the community I live in?”
