Job Summary
Join J.P. Morgan's Global Equity Research as an Associate / Vice President on the Australia Emerging Companies Team, covering high-growth, small/mid-cap, and pre-IPO/public crossover companies across Australia and New Zealand. This role is suited for experienced professionals with a strong track record in equity research or a related investment discipline—individuals who combine deep fundamental analysis with market intuition, connect macro and micro data to price action, and can independently develop and defend differentiated investment theses. You will lead the construction and oversight of financial models, drive the research agenda on covered names, produce high-impact, globally published research for institutional clients, and serve as a key point of contact for sales, trading, and corporate access—while mentoring junior team members and shaping the team's analytical framework and output quality.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead the development, maintenance, and quality assurance of complex operating/valuation models (3-statement, DCF, comps, probability-weighted scenarios, cohorts) and KPI trackers across the coverage universe, ensuring analytical rigor and consistency.
- Author and publish high-conviction research including initiations, earnings previews/reviews, sector thematic pieces, and rapid event-driven commentary—delivering clear, differentiated, and actionable investment conclusions to institutional clients globally.
- Proactively monitor and interpret ASX/NZX announcements, capital raises, regulatory filings, and industry data; identify emerging catalysts ahead of consensus, assess what is priced in, and develop scenario analyses on key drivers to inform investment recommendations.
- Design and maintain dashboards and visual frameworks that surface inflections in growth, margins, liquidity, and funding needs—enabling the team and clients to quickly identify investment-relevant trends.
- Serve as a primary contact for institutional clients, sales, and trading desks; lead corporate access engagements and management meetings; deliver timely, targeted market intelligence and trade ideas that drive client engagement and franchise value.
- Drive cross-sector and thematic research initiatives, collaborating with senior analysts and regional/global teams to produce differentiated, multi-sector insights that enhance the platform's competitive positioning.
- Mentor and develop junior analysts and associates, providing guidance on modeling best practices, research methodology, writing standards, and professional development.
- Champion the adoption of AI tools—particularly large language models (LLMs, e.g., Claude)—to accelerate document review, transcript summarization, KPI extraction, and drafting workflows; establish best practices for prompt design, verification/QA, and source traceability; ensure all usage adheres to firm-approved tools, workflows, and compliance standards.
- Uphold all research policies, information barriers, and compliance/risk standards, acting as a role model for ethical conduct and regulatory adherence within the team.
Required Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills
- 3–7+ years of experience in equity research (sell-side or buy-side), investment banking, or a related analytical role, with demonstrable expertise in small/mid-cap or emerging company coverage preferred.
- Advanced financial modeling and valuation expertise (3-statement, DCF, trading comps, scenario/sensitivity analysis) with a strong foundation in accounting and financial statement analysis.
- Proven ability to generate differentiated, investment-relevant insights and communicate them persuasively in written research and client interactions.
- Strong proficiency in Excel; hands-on experience with Bloomberg, FactSet, Capital IQ, or equivalent platforms; data and analytics capabilities (Python, R, SQL, visualization tools) strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of AI tools and methodologies, including LLMs (e.g., Claude), prompt engineering, summarization, extraction, and QA processes—applied within approved, compliant workflows.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor complex analysis into clear, actionable messaging for diverse audiences including clients, sales, trading, and senior management.
- Demonstrated passion for financial markets: a consistent habit of tracking newsflow, earnings calendars, and macro developments; linking fundamentals to price action; and iterating views rapidly as new information emerges.
- Leadership and mentoring aptitude, with the ability to manage workstreams, prioritize under pressure, and elevate the quality and productivity of the broader team.
