Yorktown Family Services is a community-based non-profit social services agency dedicated to providing effective, accessible, quality mental health treatment, prevention, and outreach services to children, youth, women, and families in West Toronto. We are uniquely organized to deliver services through two independent but integrated organizations: Infant, Child, and Youth Mental Health & West Toronto Youth Hub — a children’s mental health center, and Violence Against Women Services — a shelter for women and their children who are fleeing an abusive relationship.
Primary Function:
This role of the Engagement & Intervention Worker for the Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) and RightPlace programs is to implement engagement and behavioral health strategies to support youth and young adults to disengage from violent extremist ideologies. Further, it is to assist in reintegrating youth and young adults to community supports, reduce barriers to social exclusion and increase opportunities for social engagement, work with families impacted by violent extremist ideologies, and facilitate community capacity building opportunities for professionals across the GTA and Ontario. This position will also support as a backup staffing for Moonshot’s and Yorktown redirect ETA project and the RightPlace program. The engagement worker should have comfortability engaging people with ethno nationalist ideology and other strong and potentially harmful political viewpoints.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee social support plans as part of a wider intervention for youth and young adults involved with or a risk of violent ideologies. Connecting to social services such as housing, education, legal services etc.
- Carry a small case load of 4-6 program participants with high frequency of contact.
- Support youth and young adults to connect with the wider community to reduce social isolation.
- Work with families or family members of youth and young adults who might be involved with violent extremist ideologies.
- Work with the wider ETA treatment team to implement and coach the program participants’ day-to-day skill development and engagement to the wider community.
- Monitor regularly through the use of various tools and screeners, social engagement and risk of participant threat to the community or themselves.
- Provide online interventions and engagement through our partnership with Moonshot as a backup staff for ETA and the RightPlace program.
- Attend community table meetings that are relevant to the area of work, including the ETA community of practice.
- Participate in regional, national, and international networks.
- Lead community capacity building presentations.
- Be able to travel from time to time in Southern/Central Ontario when needed
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Arts/Science such as Child and Youth Worker BA/Social Worker BA or equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience working with youth or young adults who had gang involvement, were involved with ideologies that are associated with violent extremism, or have worked with youth and young adults who have committed hate crimes or engaged in human trafficking.
- Strong understanding of the social and mental health risk factors that lead youth and young adults to violent extremist ideologies.
- A good understanding of geopolitics and the impact on current trends that influence people toward groups that promote acts of violence.
- A strong understanding of trauma, PTSD, and the impacts of prolonged violence exposure on people.
- Strong understanding of how racism, systems of oppression, and social exclusion can lead to social isolation that may contribute to violent behavior.
- Have demonstrated the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team in the past.
- Has a proven ability to engage with hard-to-reach people and communities and can sustain and be persistent through creative engagement strategies.
- Presentation skills are above average.
- Superb interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Has demonstrated the ability to manage sensitive information and develop communication strategies to message according to alignment with risk level or opportunity.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, are essential.
