About the role
Saye & Associates, LLC is a second-generation, family-owned accounting and advisory firm in Battle Creek, Michigan. We manage full-cycle bookkeeping for a portfolio of small-business clients and we're hiring an experienced bookkeeper / staff accountant to own a set of those clients — keeping their books clean, closing their months, and being their regular point of contact in plain English.
What you'd be doing
- Record transactions, reconcile bank and credit card accounts, and keep clean general ledgers for your assigned clients in QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop
- Process accounts payable and accounts receivable as client engagements require
- Run the monthly close — journal entries, accruals, and financial statement packages
- Handle sales tax filings and other state and local compliance
- Coordinate with our payroll team as needed
- Talk with clients regularly — answer questions about their books, request missing information, and explain variances in plain English
- Prepare year-end workpapers that hand off cleanly to our tax team
- Catch problems in client books before they become problems, and flag them
What you need
- Minimum 2 years of full-cycle bookkeeping or staff accounting experience at a firm or in industry (3+ preferred)
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online (QBO) and QuickBooks Desktop (QBD) — able to clean up a messy file, not just enter transactions in a tidy one
- A solid grasp of accounting fundamentals — debits and credits, accrual basis, and how the books tie to the financial statements
- The ability to manage several client engagements at once without dropping things
- No degree required — we hire on experience and judgment
Nice to have (we'll train)
- Experience with AccountingCS, Karbon, or Truss
- Sales tax filing experience; multi-state a plus
- Industry-specific experience (construction, restaurants, professional services, nonprofits)
- Financial statement preparation for board or lender use

Schedule & location
Full-time, Monday–Friday, in-office at our Battle Creek location (491 E Columbia Ave, Suite 2). Some flexibility around month-end close.
