The In-House Painter is responsible for performing a wide range of painting and finishing tasks to maintain and enhance the appearance and durability of university facilities. This includes applying various coatings such as latex, oil-based primers, epoxy, stains, and varnishes using brush, roller, and spray techniques, as well as stenciling and window film applications. The role involves repairing drywall, plaster, and floor surfaces, ensuring high-quality finishes that meet established standards.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Applies latex, water-based pre-catalyzed, and oil-based primer paints; 2-part epoxy; oil-based stain, and quick-dry varnish.

  • Painting Skills: Safely uses ladders, scaffolding, and proper lifting techniques; brushes, rollers, spray applications, stenciling, and window film. Occasional touch-up of office furniture. Staining and finishing to match the existing wall color.

  • Repairs: Damage to drywall, plaster, and ceilings; caulking; painted and epoxied floor surfaces; ensuring wall finishes are completed to an acceptable standard.

  • Works with University Faculty and Staff to provide recommendations on paints, finishes, and colors based on customer needs.

  • Provides accurate estimates based on labor and materials.

  • Responds to off-hour/weekend/holiday emergency pages/phone call-ins for assigned areas.

  • Communicates project timeline to customers, ensuring minimal work interruptions to daily operations.

  • Utilizes work order software, email, and other Office programs to manage workload and communicate with customers.

  • Follows through on completed work to verify that proper facility conditions are restored, customer needs have been met, and task or job status is documented daily.

  • Keeps Facilities Engineering Supervisors informed about facility conditions, issues, and needs.

  • Maintains effective communication with other Facility Maintenance Technicians and Maintenance Support Staff.

  • Documentation: Completion of work orders; identification of time and material spent on the project; provision of time and material cost estimate for projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary Range

$21.17 - $32.85 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
