Overview

Mariposa House Hospice (MHH) is a charitable organization that operates a comfortable, safe, homelike hospice residence in Severn Township serving the Couchiching area including Orillia, Severn, Oro-Medonte, Ramara, and Chippewas of Rama First Nation. The atmosphere is welcoming; it is a quiet and comfortable space where people receive specialized 24/7 care at end-of-life while surrounded by family members and friends. This is made possible by a collaborative team of staff and volunteers with palliative care expertise, as well as a network of supportive community partners. Services are offered at no cost; we rely on donations and fundraising initiatives, as only a portion of our operating costs are covered by provincial funding.

As a member of the hospice team, the Facility Coordinator is responsible for the oversight of facility systems, repairs, routine preventative maintenance on equipment, oversight of grounds and custodial duties to promote the efficient and effective day-to-day operations of MHH. The Facility Coordinator is a member of the Building Committee and the Health and Safety Committee and demonstrates a strong commitment to the mission and vision of MHH by working collaboratively and respectfully with all staff and volunteers to support hospice residents and family members.

Key Responsibilities

1. Facility Systems

This position is responsible for oversight, routine testing, monitoring, reporting and maintenance of the following facility systems; reporting deficiencies to the ED and/or the Building Committee and/or the Health and Safety Committee; interacting with government officials; and making required repairs or recommendations to bring in an external contractor as needed to address remediation.

  • Water – well water, UV filtration, water softener
  • Air Quality – HVAC
  • Septic
  • Environmental (garbage removal and recycling)
  • Fire Safety (including scheduling and overseeing fire drills and all aspects of fire safety)
  • Generator
  • Public Health (e.g. pest control)

2. Building Maintenance and Repairs

  • Perform minor building maintenance and repairs, e.g., painting, floor covering, carpentry; perform plumbing, electrical and mechanical inspections to determine whether to access outside resources for repairs and maintenance
  • Ensure all tools, equipment, supplies and documentation are maintained and stored in a safe and orderly manner.
  • Prepare and submit maintenance reports as required

3. Outdoor maintenance

  • Perform outdoor custodial duties as required: weekly removal of compost and recycling; removal of debris and/or snow from doorways, walkways, stairs; ensure parking lot is clear of snow and ice during winter months; grass cutting and leaf removal; gardening and landscaping; and minor outdoor repairs.
  • Coordinate volunteers with seasonal tasks such as gardening, grass cutting, leaf removal, snow removal and application of salt or ice melt as needed.
  • Maintain tools and supplies in an orderly manner; assess need for supplies and equipment repair or replacement; order or purchase as required.
  • Prepare and submit reports as required

Qualifications

Certifications:

  • WHMIS Certification required
  • Small Operator Water Certification an asset
  • Building Maintenance and Repair Certification an asset

Demonstrated ability to:

  • Provide a wide range of facility systems oversight, e.g. water, septic, HVAC, environmental, fire safety, generator, maintenance and custodial in order to maintain a high level of safety, comfort and cleanliness for MHH staff, residents and visitors
  • Act as a flexible and collaborative team member to respond respectfully to changing or emergent needs of residents, visitors, volunteers and staff
  • Interact with colleagues, residents and visitors in emotionally charged situations

Working Conditions

  • May be required to work flexibly including nights, weekends and holidays beyond normal working hours; compensation may be as time in lieu or overtime pay as approved by supervisor
  • Required to do physically demanding tasks, e.g. snow removal, grass cutting, systems inspections, moving equipment and boxes of supplies

Job Types: Part-time, Permanent

Pay: From $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 25 per week
