Introduction:
Safe Steps is the only 24/7, family violence response centre in Victoria, providing a “state-wide entry point” for victim-survivors of domestic and family violence. Services include information and referral, crisis response, specialist family violence risk assessment, safety planning, Webchat, and access to supported crisis accommodation.
Our vision is safety, support and respect for all victim-survivors of domestic and family violence.
Our practice is trauma-informed and guided by evidence. We provide services to all victim-survivors and recognise that most of our work is dedicated to the needs of women and children which reflects the gendered nature of domestic and family violence.
Description:
THE ROLE
As a Family Violence Crisis Specialist (Intake & Assessment), you will play a critical frontline role within Victoria’s only statewide 24/7 family violence response service.
This role involves providing telephone and web‑based crisis support, conducting specialist family violence risk assessments, developing safety plans, and connecting victim‑survivors to appropriate services and supports. You will work within a collaborative, values‑driven team and contribute to continuous improvement across crisis response services.
The role is based at Safe Steps’ head office in North Melbourne, with flexibility required to work across a 24/7 roster, including weekends, evening and overnight shifts.
Skills and Experiences:
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Deliver telephone and web‑based crisis intervention, information, and referrals to victim‑survivors and service providers
Assess and respond to family violence risk in line with the MARAM Framework
Identify immediate safety needs and determine appropriate crisis response pathways
Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to support effective service delivery
Provide crisis support, information, and referrals to internal and external services
Maintain accurate, high‑quality client records in line with legislative and organisational requirements
Participate in reflective practice, supervision, and continuous quality improvement initiatives
Uphold Safe Steps’ commitment to inclusion, equity, and cultural safety for all communities
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
Bachelor of Social Work or equivalent qualification, or willingness to work towards one
Minimum 3 years’ experience in the specialist family violence sector or crisis‑focused roles
Demonstrated experience in intake, screening, and risk assessment
Strong knowledge of the Victorian family violence system and referral pathways
MARAM Framework training (or willingness to complete on commencement)
Ability to work calmly and effectively in high‑pressure, time‑critical environments
Commitment to Safe Steps’ values of Integrity, Diversity, and Empowerment
Current Working with Children Check and willingness to undergo a National Police Check.
Desirable
Experience in telephone or web‑based counselling or crisis services
Experience working in 24/7 or shift‑based service environments
