Introduction:
Safe Steps is the only 24/7, family violence response centre in Victoria, providing a “state-wide entry point” for victim-survivors of domestic and family violence. Services include information and referral, crisis response, specialist family violence risk assessment, safety planning, Webchat, and access to supported crisis accommodation.

Our vision is safety, support and respect for all victim-survivors of domestic and family violence.

Our practice is trauma-informed and guided by evidence. We provide services to all victim-survivors and recognise that most of our work is dedicated to the needs of women and children which reflects the gendered nature of domestic and family violence.

Description:
THE ROLE

Reporting to the Senior Practitioner and Team Leader, the Family Violence Crisis Specialist – Brief Intervention will work as part of the Victorian statewide family violence service, providing specialist brief intervention case management responses to adult and child victim‑survivors.

This role requires a high level of professionalism, sound ethical practice, and the ability to work calmly and effectively in a crisis‑driven environment.

Employment options:
1.0 FTE – Monday to Friday, office hours (76 hours per fortnight)

0.9 FTE – Monday to Friday, office hours (68.4 hours per fortnight, 9 days per fortnight)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide telephone and web‑based crisis intervention, information, advice, and referrals to victim‑survivors and service providers
Deliver brief intervention case management, including risk management and safety planning
Assess and respond to family violence risk using the MARAM Framework
Work in alignment with trauma‑informed, evidence‑based practice
Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives
Actively participate in team collaboration, supervision, and reflective practice
Promote inclusive and culturally safe practice for LGBTIQA+, CALD, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and people with disabilities
Maintain accurate, high‑quality client records in line with legislative and organisational requirements
Participate in reflective practice, supervision, and continuous quality improvement initiatives
Uphold Safe Steps’ commitment to inclusion, equity, and cultural safety for all communities

Skills and Experiences:
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

Bachelor of Social Work or equivalent qualification, or willingness to work towards one
Minimum 3 years’ experience in the specialist family violence sector or crisis‑focused roles
Strong understanding of the Victorian family violence system and service landscape
Demonstrated ability to assess and respond to risk using the MARAM Framework
Sound knowledge of trauma‑informed practice, crisis intervention, and the gendered nature of violence
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including in crisis‑driven environments
Commitment to Safe Steps’ values of Integrity, Diversity, and Empowerment
Current Working with Children Check and willingness to undergo a National Police Check.

Desirable

Experience in telephone or web‑based counselling or crisis services
Experience delivering brief intervention or short‑term case management
Completion of MARAM Comprehensive (Tier 1) training or willingness to complete
